Trailer wiring?

OK, since this is specific to the 40....

I want to add a trailer light plug to the 40. I have the entire wire harness open for repair (and some mods, all gas-->diesel swap related) so this is the time to do it. Problem is: I don't know hardly anything about trailers.

Here's what I know:
  • The truck will use a pintle hitch (should not affect wiring--obviously, but might limit trailer options)
  • Any trailer it pulls (nothing in mind, this is just in case in 20 years Dad wants to tow something) will be small.
  • Small and light enough to not have trailer brakes.
  • It wouldn't be any sort of expedition trailer. If anything just a simple box to toss extra stuff in for camping.
  • The 3B alternator isn't all that big, so it won't be charging much of anything on the trailer, just lights is what I'm thinking.

That list leads me to believe that a 4 wire setup is the most common and the way to go. Am I wrong in thinking that?

If so, I just need a 3 wire to 2 wire converter for each tail light, right? Like one of these to make it all work?

You are exactly right. That converter is all you will need.

I've got much the same set up as you described, ie, fj40, pintle hitch, light trailer, & no trailer brakes.

I found it best to splice into the stock wireing inside the back pass. side rear. Best to keep the converter inside the cab, away from the elements.

Wiring it is pretty simple but I can go into more detail if necessary. Sorry, no pics.

If you plan to use your trailer behind something other than your cruiser. It is better to wire the converter on the trailer side. The trailer will then work with combined brake/turn or seperated brake, turn.
