Hey folks, I've got a travel trailer that weighs about 4500 lbs that I'd like to occasionally tow with my diesel swapped FJ60, but it kinda sucks because I don't have trailer lights or a brake controller on that rig.
Has anybody come up with a way to hook up a brake controller on one of these old beasts? Eventually I'd like to pull this trailer or perhaps a newer, lighter one from Tennessee to the Southwestern US. That's a long way to go, and I need it to go as problem free as possible.
I could probably figure out how to wire in lights and a universal controller, but it's always nice to see what others have done.

My other truck is a 2006 Tacoma with a V6, but it doesn't pull as well as my little 4bt, and gets horrible gas mileage. I can't really afford to get a bigger truck, so I'd like to find a way to work with what I have, although I'm aware lots of other trucks could do the same job with less effort.
Those other trucks are expensive, and what I have is paid for and mostly reliable.

It looks like the controller only needs a signal from the brake light (or pedal switch?)

I have never seen these electric brakes, in EU we use push in brakes on the trailer, pretty fail proof because it adjust to the brake force.

What hj60 said. There are brake controllers that use accelerometer chips to modulate the electric brakes on the trailer, assuming that’s what you have. They work great and greatly reduce the complexity.

i used a hopkins insight and love it. it did require splicing into a brake wire and running some power wires but it’s clean and i love that i can also add extra braking manually

Another vote for redarc. But you gotta buy the universal harness separately.

I love mine, and you can move it to different vehicles. No splicing wires or equipment in the cab. Control the settings from the App on your phone. App does not need to be active all of the time for it to work. Once you have dialed in your settings to accomodate the trailer you are good to go. Set it and forget it.
