trail run/clean up idea - November meeting idea

Hi guys,
Anyone up for holding the November meeting in Diablo Canyon/Buckman? Lots of fun wheeling and a lot of rubbish to pick up.
Thoughts?

Some temptation

OK, this has gone over like a fart in church. How about a little taste of some of the destinations:

actually, I thought this was a great idea! I passed on the info for the ranger district contact so we can get credit with the forest service for doing things like this. I am in for helping out. I even can volunteer my trailer for hauling out vehicles and large items.

Holding the meeting there is a stretch but organizing a run/clean-up shouldn't be too hard. Organize it and pick a date.

Where is that? I'm not familiar. Lots of water there - are you sure it's in NM?

That'd be Buckman Crossing. The rim to the left of the mirror in the third image is a 5 minute walk from my mom's.

The near side looks pretty shallow, but I wonder how deep that flow is on the other side...

Josh is right though, there is plenty of trash to be picked up there. There also used to be a lot of squatters there, in "Diablo Canyon".

Great. My wife reckons either this Saturday or next Saturday works for us.
We could then go to our house after the clean up for the meeting. Emma could make a couple Curries and others can bring nibbles. Thoughts?
That is Buckman Crossing. It looked like I could drive across it but given it was just Liam and me I thought better of it.
The area has become a hang out and party area for many of the hispanic laborers so there is trash, beer cans, food wrappers, etc everywhere. Further in there are car bits, appliances, etc.
Where do we take the rubbish once it's collected? We would go right past the dump but I'll have to find out the hours and costs.

Great idea Josh. This club needs to be more involved with trail cleanup.

I'm open on Sundays only during the month of Nov and I like the idea of checking out this place.

Sunday could work. I'll have to check with The Sheila.

I was looking at the forecast and this Saturday is calling for snow (god willing and the creek don't rise, touch wood, fingers crossed...and any other talismanic items I can find - I WANT SNOW! Too many years of living in that Big Brother furnace of a country.... sorry, off on a tangent again....) so not sure if this Sunday would be good or not. Picking up trash could be hampered a bit by snow cover.

I'll ask Emma how we look for the following Sunday. I agree with you Ash that we should do some more community-minded activities. I wonder if we could get the New Mexican to do a wee human interest story on us cleaning up out there to get some good press for four wheelers and maybe get some Cruiser guys who don't know about us to contact us. This could also bring some attention to the fact that some members of our society are leaving their culture in our bushland and perhaps call to their attention that this is not a very friendly thing to do.

Any time anyone wants to come up and play out there just let me know. I'd love to meet up for a frolic. My number is Santa Fe area code, 57 oh - zero six 79.

Ash, I may get you to bring my trailer up - thoughts?

Josh

I would be interested in a run like this, but won't be able to get out this weekend, I'm oncall, and stuck near an internet connection/power.

What? I think you have the technology in that Hundy to make this happen, no? EvDo card perhaps? Come on now, geek master....you can come up with a way :flipoff2:

For $20 a month you can use your Verizon smartphone 3G anytime you want at about DSL speed.

For $0/month, it's easy to download an app that can do the same thing :D

I have Verizon 4g, and have on occasion tethered for oncall work, but only for a few minutes of work at a time and definitely within the city limits. Sustained VPN connections over the 4g is not stable, and I can't rely on. Not to mention, I've had pages, where I spent the next 10-12 hours stuck at a computer, not something as easy when you are out and about.

I think this is a great idea.

I would have posted up earlier but my November is back to back "SOMETHING".
I think I could swing November 18th and would be willing to bring a trailer to haul off heavy stuff if y'all want, otherwise I'll bring my hoopty and haul off garbage bags of stuff.

I was just logging on to suggest 18 November. That would work for me. What say you, Ash? I'm even willing to miss the Bronco game for this (which is why I initially suggested Saturday:D).

Of course, we have to have Ash there; otherwise we'll have to spend a fortune hiring a clown to entertain us.:meh:

All those in favour of Sunday, 18 November?

I'm glad to hear that I'm needed for something. I'll pencil this into the calendar.

Let's work out the logistics of this trail cleanup. Will this be a wheeling trip with some trash pickup? Or will this be primarily a trail clean type of event? If so, bringing up pickup trucks and trailers sound like a good idea. But, what do with the trash afterwards?

Should David Lawrence be contacted for some sort of a support from the FS or do we need BLM support?

Did Josh get approval from the CEO on having us invade the Casa for the Nov mtg/get together?

Possible attendees:

Jstincase - Dmax
Shawn - Ford or trailer
Ali- 80
Slimbudda - Hundy
SteveLCetc -
Evan -
Anyone else?
Pappy - possible

CEO approval - check.

The 18th is possible. Can't this weekend.

I envision it as a semi-wheeling outing where we go on runs with empty bags and come back with full bags and locations of bigger items. We then go en mass to the locations of the bigger items to drag/hoist/push said items onto trailers, etc.

In this way, we have a bit 'o fun to break up the good deeds.

Problem with Sunday, of course, is that the dump is closed. I have a vague recollection that Monday is a holiday as well, though not sure if it is applicable to the dump. I suppose we could do the traditional disposal method of dumping it in the nearest arroyo, but that may defeat the purpose of our efforts...:hhmm:

David: can the FS take charge of the trash once we collect it? Do you have any special access to the dump after hours as a FS god?

If I had land and a truck, I'd be happy to deal with it during the following week. Sadly I have neither and my neighbours would not be impressed with trailer loads of trash on the street. Anyone else who could do this?

As for the meeting at our house after the trash pickup - I have a tentative approval. Emma has offered to make a couple curries, so if others want to bring nibbles, I reckon we can do it there. Bear in mind that our house is teeny-tiny, so we may be both inside and outside.

Josh
