A couple of months ago I went to check my timing and my ADL would not short. Rather than do something about it I went into denial. The Cruiser runs great really has no issues but its time to come out of my denial and deal with the ADL thing. I was reading somewhere if your TPS is not closed it will not let your ADL short Is this true? What other things would I want to check to get it to short?

Why do you say it would not short. The check engine light not flashing? That does not happen on 95 and later trucks.

Hmmm...I didn't realize that. Glad to know, cuz I was going to start playing with my TPS since my CEL doesn't flash either. Whew...another non-problem dodged :D

Phil: what do you mean by "the timing does not change"? If you mean at a warm idle, then mine doesn't either. But it's in spec.

The timing does not change when the ADL is shorted, engine at operating temp and normal idle. Voltage in within spec per FSM between TE1 and E1 on the ADL.

As I understand it , you short the pins, adjust the distributor and then remove the short for the base timing to be at the new setting. So if you short those pins and the timing is still wrong that isn't a problem, just move the distributor til it's where you want it.

If the timing is unchanged when the terminals E1 and TE1 have been shorted your are not in service mode and still under ECM control.

Phil,
You didn't mention if you checked the fxn of TPS. Is it in spec, properly adjusted and working properly?

Also, Christo - on my 1997 my CEL does blink when I've got the TE1 & E1 pins shorted.

Also also, don't know if it is absolutely imperative - haven't tried it - but the manual states that it should be in N, not P with AC off.

Mike, ok, I remember on my 95 when I wanted to set the base timing I went of the info that the light would flash. Never could get it to do that. Maybe because the 95 was kinda OBDII and the 97 is complete OBDII.
