Hey Guys & Gals -

This came across the e-mail list for the TLCA board reps. Todd Kaderabak (Editor for Toyota Trails) wanted to pass along the contact info for the Tech Exchange column in Toyota Trails. The responses are written by Mark Whatley - a Cruiser mechanic in Alaska who really knows his stuff. If you send him questions, I don't know if he responds directly to you or just in the magazine. Either way, it's a good resource.

Here's the contact info below...

Evan

I'd like to ask all of the board reps to remind their folks of the valuable resource they have available to them in the Tech Exchange.

Please ask your members to take advantage of this resource by directing questions to Mark Whatley as follows.

techeditor@tlca.org

Or via post:
Toyota Trails Tech Exchange
Mark Whatley
391 Adele Circle
Wasilla, AK 99654

When people ask what TLCA does for them -- here's one answer: the Tech Exchange.

Thanks very much.

Marks' columns are basically the only reason I get TT.....

The guy knows EVERYTHING about cruisers.

It is possible that he has [finally] embraced the 80-Series. He recently bought one and is starting the build. We'll see.

Really?

Wow. This must be a big move on Mark's part considering he seems to be such a Land Cruiser purist (carburation, manual trannies, etc.).

That said, as far back as 2000 he was talking about how impressive a rig the 80 series was in his tech column...

Good news indeed. Also, it makes sense, lots of people are going into 80 series vehicles as the prices drop dramatically (fuel prices/age)...there is more 80 series market than any other vehicle in LC world it seems. Look at all the newbies posting up everyday in the 80's section.

Actually, I understand that more FJ Cruisers have been sold than 80 series in the US... Then again *US* sales of the 80 are an extreme minority - I heard 10% somewhere? Anybody know?

I did post a 3FE 80 for sale, for anyone willing to take a little longer to get there but not having to worry about head gasket issues...

Might this be a solid front axle rig:
There has also been talk of a "new" Land Cruiser that we might possibly get to see, so that may turn out to be pretty interesting as well.

This is true, and the margin of 2007 FJCs vs 80-Series grows more every day. Toyota sold more FJCs in the first 12 months (not the 2007 model year which is ~18 months) than 91-97 for the 80-Series. The after market support for the FJC is outstanding.

Given a choice I'd take an 80 over an FJC. There is just something about them that doesn't appeal with me.

No solid front axle, no front locker. Nothing $5k wouldn't fix. A "dealer installed option"? We need to get with Dan or Ryan on that...
