Hi everyone, I'm new to Mud but I am interested in info on Toyota Dyna...specifically finding out which engine I should try to pursue when importing. Hopefully im in the right forum?? Im trying to chose between 13Bt, 14BT, or 15BFT or 15BFTE. I live in BC, Canada and intend to use for weekend prospecting in mountainous terrain. While I'm looking for solid off-road performance, most km will be hwy and require sensible mpg so that frequent high km trips don't break the bank account. Long term I'll likely end up towing a utility trailer but don't expect the truck to be loaded with much more than1/2-1 ton on a regular basis. Seems like 15BFT engine (does E actually refer to ECU or is it intercooler?) would be best for intended use but I am concerned about possible loss of hwy mpg (does anyone have any numbers on mpgs for this 4.1 dyna option?). If not 15B, the 14B seems the next best option but the engine seems pretty rare here in NA compared to 13B which have been brought in by landcruiser guys? Just concerned that some long term headaches could be avoided on parts end going with 13B?? Also any info on turbo reliability and any other sources of major problems would be great! Thanks in advance.

None of those engines are "common" or supported for parts by Toyota Canada. Of those engines in the Land Cruiser world the 13BT is by far the most common as some of the JDM Land Cruisers had that engine.
I believe any of the engines with the "E" are electronic controlled so you probably want to avoid those unless you bring the whole vehicle over (to ensure you have all the necessary bits and pieces).
The 1HD-T or 1HZ are much more popular and are still current Toyota engines (but not supported by Toyota Canada either).

The E suffix on the 15 is the electronic version used the the Toyota version of the Hummer..I have seen one here and they are cool but would not even try to score one in North America, I have the 15BF and would have liked to get the BFT but none available here it seems...Here (Asia) they come in coaster buses but from what I know reading here on mud they are not that available in North America...great engines but you gotta be able to find one and you gotta be able to get parts...It seems the 13BT is the engine of choice there. But it all comes down to parts availability. Ive read many threads on whats available and it it were me I would for sure go with the Cummings 4cyl diesel. But in the end its your truck...go for what you want...
If you have a line on the 14BT or 15BT then grab it. As far as parts go they will pretty much all need to come from out of country anyways, and the later B models are all quite stout so that shouldnt be a frequent issue.
If you cant find a 14 or 15, then grab a 13BT, as said, they are more common. Also, pricing will be higher for the 14 and 15B models to the point where they will likely be a less attractive option as opposed to the 13BT.

Good 2 know...thanks guys! Ya its taking a lot of digging to find dynas with 15b anywhere. There are a few out there though but again you're right about cost . When you factor in often high kms and hard use on 4wd units it doesnt seem worth it. I might make a separate post for this, but aside from engine I am also weighing whether importing lower km 2wd drive and doing 4wd conversion might be worthwhile? Im not setup to do conversion job myself so with labor cost the job would have a pretty large price tag, but seems like it still might run me the same cost overall as importing well used 4wd drive version . Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Sounds like you're interested in the whole truck, not just an engine for a 'Cruiser? 4WD Dyna's are pretty hard to find.

Have you seen the ones in the country already? This guy has a fleet of these things. I'm sure he could tell you everything you need to know.

Am I being a little too concerned to consider B/H engines (mostly 15B-FT ,and 12H-T) over the 1HD-T or 1HZ on the sole basis that making sure to always change the timing belts on time can be a pain in the ...ss?

The timing belt is easy to change and it's not gonna break at 100,001 km - I don't think I've ever changed one that had any visible damage.
Having said that, the belt is cheap and it's not hard to change, so there's no reason not to change it. Personally out of your list, it's a 1HD-T but I'd extend to an FT or FTE

turbo one is not. That’s where most people start. Seems the prospector dude who started this
never came back. I’ve got 13BT & 12HT both are super engines. Considering the owner, darn near
indestructible. I would have issues with non turbo power. Just not my speed, pun intended.
Any of these will be good so long as the vehicle around it is viable
