I just bought a pop up with electric brakes. Was wondering what people have done for the trailer brake management on their rig? I also need the 7 pin trailer harness. I have a 96 LX450 thanks.

search is your friend in this section. Lots of discussion on electric brake controllers and what's needed to wire them in your 80 series. Search Prodigy or brake controller.

Although with pop up I doubt you need air bags I just installed them to pull our new Lance 1885.

Tonight I'm putting the Tekonsha P3 in my vehicle. These were the results of my searching previous posts. Hope that helps!

For the money it is really hard to beat the P3, and you can find it discounted if you search hard with Google. I am a huge fan of the Jordan Ultima, but it has been unavailable for quite a few years. I don't know why no one has bought the rights and started making them again. They are simply brilliant off pavement. I am dreading the day my 10 year old Ultima fails and I will have to downgrade to an electronic model.....

I have used the P3 and it is a good controller, but it can't really compare to one with a direct connection to your brake pedal.

Here is a great summary page for controllers.

That's a great amount of info thanks! I actually found a controller in my dads old beater that hasn't moved in 3 years. It's a Techonsha Voyager. I'll be wiring it up tomorrow. Can't beat free.

Free is good. I won my P3, which I mounted in a RAV4, in a dual sport motorcycle ride. ..... http://www.spokanister.net/Vehicles_RAV4_Brake_control.html

But you need to understand that most pendulum type controllers are hopeless on rough roads - they will cause the tires to lock up prematurely when you hit a dip going downhill, for example, plus the Voyager is not adjustable for "ramp up" time (the time it takes to go from the starting current to the full user-selected current). The P3 has various adjustments that help to mitigate the problems of a cheap inertial unit.

Try your Voyager, but I expect that you will be unhappy once you venture onto forest roads.

I had a Voyager years ago when I was towing a 6000 lb travel trailer behind a Suburban, and I remember swearing a few times..... My wife remembers too ;)

The biggest advantage of the units that tie into the truck's hydraulics, or directly to the pedal, is that the response is truly proportional to the braking you are getting from the truck ... not some guesstimate that the electronics comes up with. And if you slam on the brakes in a panic stop, you get full trailer braking instantly, not a few seconds later.

A light trailer doesn't present much danger with a cheap controller, but things can get dicey with a towed load equal to or greater than the truck's weight.
