Tow Tire update

At GSMTR i won a $500 gift certificate! So it had to go towards a set of at least 4 mickey thompson or dick cepek tires.

They didnt have a 285 load E tire so i went with the 265/75 R16 Mickey Thompson ATZ Radilal Plus.

They were an inch taller than the new STZs and had a higher load rating (3,415 vs 3100.)

Obviously i couldn't pass up the price...

They ship out tomorrow if i don' t like em they may be up for sale..

If you have signs on a vehicle, commercial, ect. DOT will shut you down. I has happened to us a few times, not much. For recreational use......I'm gonna take my chances. One BIG KEY!!!....have everything looking clean, no oil on rims, broken lights, have everything strapped/chained per DOT.....do this and even if you are pulled over your not gonna have much trouble. If everything looks legal per DOT.....your in pretty good shape.......THIS IS NOT THE CASE FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES.

The big 3 all raised the bar in 2011. The Ford is a complete different animal from that POS 2010 6.4 King Ranch we bought and kept for 6 months.

The new Duramax motor is unreal. It has 7 more HP than the new twin turbo Ford AND it is proven. The new Ford motor looks good, but I would be a bit scared until totally proven.....

If money was no object I would have a 3500 Denali like that one that was in Gilmer at the mudfest in January :smokin:

If I had $60,000 to buy a new truck, I may.....may would look at the Ford again because the Chevy is getting a bit dated. The interior and style are all still 2007 and the new Ford has some cool s*** in it.

I Dodge would be my distant third pick. It is cheaper than the other 2 but not enough to make it worth buying IMO.

EDIT: Found a comparison, I see at the end that Dodge has tweaked its motor since the article was written....

EDIT2: This is really going to get Charles H Kim fired up......he lives for this kind of argument....debate......

Don't really care much these day. Must be the old age.
Your money. Buy what you want/like.

I'll keep my Dodge for another 5 years or so. Might be ready to buy a new truck by then.

guess I have no chance on this w/ my Paloma(Dodge)!

I made some repairs on my paloma and shes moves like a young gir again!:hillbilly:

I already started on the maintenace on my Paloma!

*Got new Brakes all around
*new front Rotors

*repair out put shaft seal on tranny
*change oil on tranny

*Pending 2 rear tires

And Prolly a head gasket on my 80:mad:

....no much of a chance for slider on the 80:mad:

Update to the tow truck & trailer.

Chris at 49 tire hooked me up again with some tires for the trailer, he also mounted my raffle tires.
Trailer
I changed out my 10 ply Loadstar 7.50-16 LT tires for some 14 ply Crosswind L780 235/85R17 tires. Gained a little more max load per tire as well- 3750lbs vs 2925lbs per tire.

Pic 1
Fairly aggressive tread for a street tire but i wont be seeking out any mud.

Side by side comparison of 265/75R16 mickey thompson ATZ Plus and 285/75 R16

What does this show us Lenny?

Your new tire is the same height as a 4/32 (worn out) 285?

Do you like the MT's? At least they are US made in AR by Cooper.

Try 2/32 Bomar.

Pretty much. Not that much difference between mickey thompson 265 & a 285. Even though the 285 is worn it may be 3/4 inch taller overall, which is only 3/8s taller mounted on the truck.

I would like to see if my mpg goes up a little... Yeah right.

I have a big problem with my tow rig. My Cummins VP44 injection pump is toast.

I guess I'm going to have to bail on Moab.

Get busy. I thought Chineese people had a awesome work ethic.

Got mine from Thorobread Diesel. $1200 and I did the work. Not a hard job. Couple of hours and your done!

I was joking about not being able to go. No way I'd miss this trip.

I've got the injection pump, cam position sensor, 2 gaskets (intake air horn), and pump gear puller.

Just have not had time to work on the truck yet.

I did a quick search of this thread and didn't come up with anything. If I missed it then I apologize. What is everyone's opinion on locks while attached to your truck? When my smoker was parked and uncoupled it sat behind a locked gate with a coupler lock like this Trimax UMAX 50 Universal Coupler Lock [TM-UMAX50] - $37.95 : Heartland Lock, Trailer Coupler, Wheel, Door & Hitch, Receiver, Motorcycle & Bicycle Locks along with a lock that secures the latch and a wheel boot. I feel that it was pretty secure while at it's home.

How can I make it more secure while attached to my truck short of sleeping in it with my Glock or chaining a few Pits to it? The last one that was stolen had a latch lock that was cut and a padlock on the safety chains that was also cut. I also had it parked in a place that I erroneously thought was safe. My receiver is also locked.

I've seen a few receiver latch locks that looked to be more cut resistant but all the ones I've seen use a cylinder style key. I have always shied away from that style of key as I've seen them picked with a Bic style pen.

What is your opinion of the ultimate lock?

I think this is a good option for bulldog hitch.
