I really did'nt feel very comfortable towing the 40 loaded for a weekend of wheelin in the mountains with my 08 Tundra. The trailer was a 20ft flatbed with brakes only on the rear axle. Felt like it was pushing me on the long down hill grades. Behind a Taco no way:meh:

Well I'm either crazy, stupid or both cause I used my 05 4.7L Tundra towing my 76 Military Jeep Kaiser (6000lb dry weight, not counting the trailer weight) on my 16x8' trailer w/brakes on one axle. I didn't have any problems...although it was noticeable. :D I also wasn't going up or down any mountains. ;)

Beam it to your destination with your tricorder. Simple, safe, effective.

seems to be too much weight for a Tacoma pickup

I am considering getting a tandem axle flatbed trailer (with electric brakes) to use to tow my FJ40, as well as haul stuff to the dump on occasion.

I have an '08 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport (limited slip rear end w/ 4.56 gears)with a double cab, long bed, v6, automatic transmission. The truck also has the toyota tow package with a class IV hitch, transmission cooler, preinstalled wiring. I would get an electronic brake controller for the tacoma.

The FJ40 is running 35" tires, has a 2F, SM420, full roll cage, soft top. I know FJ40's are pretty heavy, but the curb weights I have found, coupled with the trailer weight of ~2000lbs would be pretty close to the 6500lbs limit of the Tacoma.

I know that a 3/4 ton or 1 ton full sized truck would be ideal, however, I only need to tow the FJ40 a couple of times a year.

Will the Tacoma suffice?

In a word, IMO, yes the Tacoma would suffice, but under condition I guess.
Look at an aluminum trailer, considerably lighter than the #2000 of heavy tandem. You could get by with a 14' tandem as well. You have got to have
good brakes with a controller, and set them up properly. You're not going to power up the Snoqualamie Pass at 75 mph either. That Taco engine will suffer.
I wouldn't recommend it, but if you're slow and careful you could haul it around.
Seriously consider a bigger truck, Tundra size.

I have access to an '01 tundra, our the.f350. I suppose in a pinch, the two will Suffice but for trips I am planning on, the f350 will be the truck I use.

I would think you answered your own question, leave the Tacoma at home and use the F-350. Then you have no worries.

u-haul wont even rent a car hauler to you for that combination of vehicles. I just needed to haul the frame and tub, and they said nope, the tacoma's gvwr is not enough to haul an fj40. even though it was not a complete vehicle, their liability policy put the kibosh on it. I ended up having to rent one of their small moving vans to tow the car hauler. it actually worked out better, as I was able to load the hard top and all the other parts in the moving van, and made it in one trip.

With the EXTREMELY disappointing MPG's my tacoma has been getting lately, and the fact that the truck isn't reporting anythign wrong, I Am strongly considering trading it in on an F-150 w/ EcoBoost. Bigger truck, 11k towing capacity. 150 more horse power, 200ft/lbs more torque. Same MPGs....

Go Tundra!!! We loved ours...

I use a 3/4 ton pickup to tow my 60 around....I would not use anything smaller. Dual axle metal deck flat bed trailer with brakes on both axles. It stops and handles very well, has not scared the $%# of me yet. Half ton trucks regardless of make arenot the best towing solution.
