Sorry if this is answered elsewhere, I did a search on "touch-up", and didn't find much. I'm looking for some Sky Blue 854 touch up paint, and tried all the usual suspects (Duplicolor, Paint Scratch, Automotive Touchup, drcolorchip, ExpressPaint), and none of them sell any. :frown:

Any auto paint shop will mix you up a small amount, and even sell you some CO2 to spray it with if you want.

They also have these containers that have a marble and a paint applicator in it just like the duplicolor things but much larger that worked well for me. Plus the paint matched much better than any duplicolor ones I have purchased...

jmdaniel,

I just went out and checked my remaining 4 spray cans of #854 touch up paint. I ordered mine from automotivetouchup.com and these 4 are my second order. I didn't believe you so I went to the site and checked and you are correct, they don't list 854 any longer. I know I've ordered 8 cans from them and my wife will gladly complain to you also about the cost !!!

Maybe give them a call. Mine were a very close match and my paint is pretty well oxidized. Good luck. This was for my 1977 sky blue 40.

Sent automotivetouchup.com an email and this was their response:

it is listed under a 1976

854 Blue Exterior

Paintscratch.com has always come through for me. I purchased touch up paint for my '82 white FJ40 and my '81 Medium blue FJ40. Both times their paint was dead on and a perfect match.

I think I'll take a chance on automotive touchup. Paint Scratch shows 854 as a code for a 1980 Land Cruiser color, which I think is too recent, and Sky Blue as the name for a Camry color. :hhmm:

I found this pic in the Official Color Code thread here, and that is the color, as far as I can tell:

And a pic of mine:

I know the pics look different, but I thinks that is the shiznitt. And what am I out if I'm wrong, but a few bucks.... Thanks for the advice, folks!

After several attempts to purchase touch up,
I took a small part...the wiper motor cover...to the local auto paint supplier BAPS. They computer matched the color exactly.

Just an FYI - Touch Up Paint and accessories | AutomotiveTouchup is a TERRIBLE match for Sky Blue 854.

I had my 78 FJ40 painted last summer. This was the truck's 1st respray. We matched the paint via the inside of the fuel tank cover which looked to be absolutely untouched by weather, sun, and agin. The test spray match was perfect and was also compared to other areas of the truck that were spared weathering along with exterior panels after wet sanding and buffing to try and bring the color back. I'm confident they matched Sky Blue correctly.

Fast forward to current....I got some QuickHinges figured I would paint myself before install. After some searching I ordered paint from Automotive Touchup. Color isn't even close -

It has a greenish tint. I have about a pint of the paint used last year remaining - will try the Preval sprayers Preval Sprayer - Preval. Unfortunately my paint store can't package paint in spray cans - which may have something to do with spray paint being illegal to buy in Chicago without a business license.

Automotive Touchup has ignored my issue thus far. Was hoping they would fix this but I suspect they don't have the right formula and thus won't resolve or return messages. EDIT - finally got hold of them and they will not resolve. Contrary to what the website indicates - there is ZERO guarantee on color match and nothing they will do to resolve. It's a complete gamble ordering from them.

Buyer beware!

You might give airbrush a try. I have a couple wren/binks airbrushes I have had since the 70's that I use for small touch up. I can dial it down to about a quarter inch pattern up to about 3 inches. A lot more control than a rattle can and you don't have the empty can to deal with. I just sprayed inside the back half of the cab and rear fender wells of my 40 with it.

To get the color right on a 30-50 year old paint job, have your paint scanned and mixed to match the old faded paint. The kick vents are easy to remove to take to the paint store. Did this on my 45 pickup with faded paint, didn't want shinny new horizon blue, so matched the faded and it came out perfect.

it took us quite some trial and error to match the faded original paint on the front of the truck when it came time to re-spray the rear

the line between old and new is right at the weld between rocker panel and front tub

more pics of the transformation are here --> the DSRTRDR is getting some TLC . . .
