Tosshin.com - New Alternative to Partsquip, Megazip, Amayama, Carmarka etc

Just thought I'd post up my experience using Tosshin.com

They are based in Chiba, Japan and I have used them a couple of times now. They seem to be cheaper than Partsquip, Megazip, Carmarka and Amayama and for both orders I've placed and were quick to get stock. First order was ~$1000AUD and contained 83 different items, they were able to get stock and ship in 6 days (including a weekend). I shipped via Japan EMS shipping and it took 7 days to arrive in Australia. The packaging was really good without being over the top (which would have increased shipping costs) and all items are genuine toyota.

I've just placed another order for $1000aud with 28 items, took them 6 days (including a weekend) to get all the different parts and package them up, and were able to ship out the same day... Will report back when it arrives.

I've purchased around $9000 worth of parts from a number of different suppliers and Tosshin seems to be the best I've used so far (and will continue to use them). They also offer DHL and Fedex shipping etc which would be faster, but is more expensive. Given Japan EMS was able to deliver in 7 days and was half the price of Fedex/DHL, I am happy to wait. For reference, I have been able to get stuff delivered in 3 days from Dubai via Fedex/DHL (as they were the only shipping options Carmarka used), but would rather save money and just wait a little longer.

P.S I have no affiliation with them at all. Only posting to help fellow mud members save a few bucks and give a few options.

@Feistl - Trying to order a part, but I don't see a shipping quote, estimate, etc. for any of the methods. The part has been verified as 'in stock' and they are asking me to pay, but without shipping included in the invoice or at least estimated, I'm not sending money. What am I missing?

Ahh, Yes sorry I should explain that...

So their process seems to be you order the parts you want, they'll then confirm if everything is available and the pricing is correct (very occasionally prices due fluctuate a little) then you make payment. Once everything arrives at their location, they pack everything into a box and work out shipping based on dimensions. You then make payment for the shipping and they ship it out.

The big problem with this process is you don't know what the shipping will cost until after all the parts arrive, meaning its hard to compare them to the other alternatives.

But as an example, with the last order I processed the shipping quote from Carmarka was $252usd (included a lot of large items), Tosshin ended up being able to do it for $110usd via TMS.

So it is a bit of a risk as you don't know shipping, but they don't seem to be trying to make money off the shipping component and as mentioned they do focus on packing as efficiently as possible so shipping is reasonable.

The parts I want to order will weigh somewhere between 300-400 lbs, and I have no idea what the shipping bill would be from Japan to the USA. I'm not willing to give them $4k and then find out the shipping puts the total beyond reasonable. I'll have to stick with Partsouq or other vendors (which includes, like, any other vendors) that can provide shipping estimates ahead of payment. Also, on my particular order the price was comparable to what I could get the parts for at a dealer anyway, so adding any shipping at all makes the whole exercise pointless since the dealer doesn't charge for shipping. Not to mention there could be an import tax added on top.

300-400 lbs will be in excess of $1200 to ship— especially if it needs to be palletized/crated, etc.

Very good to hear! I think I'll give them a go next order. I've wanted a bulk supplier based in Japan for awhile. Seems bizarre ordering parts made in Japan via UAE and double shipping everything. I'd also prefer the profits to stay in the country of origin as much as possible.

So, i tried out this outfit today and punched in my VIN but their system doesn't recognize it. So I tried going through the long way and didn't even see the 80 series as an option. What am I doing incorrectly here?

It's only loaded with the Japanese part catalogue. VIN lookup won't work. Check under "Land Cruiser Van" for the 80 series era models, that's what they called it in Japan. The HZJ81/HDJ81 are the domestic equivalents of the HZJ80/HDJ80. The FZJ80 will be listed there too.

I'm not sure how to know what the grade and other categories mean. Also the difference in the 5 letters behind FZJ80G.

Those letters are the model identifier that can be found on the build sticker on the inside of the drivers door.

GNPEKA is a code that indicates the level of trim for your production Model. For example HDJ81V-RNPGX is the code for mine which is a top JDM spec model.
Has cloth seats, Leather wrapped shifter knobs and steering wheel. 3 x diff locks, Center console fridge, Cruise control, and parcel shelf cover blind. The only part about mine is that the G indicates TZ/RZ/VZ spec which I don't believe came with the Center console fridge.

But if you can't find a leather covered shifter knob then looking up HDJ81-RNPEX gives you part numbers for the same parts but for a lower spec interior so rubber (ish) covered shifter knobs and steering wheel. There is an excellent resource on the Landcruiser Heritage Museum web page.

Sometimes you have to look at the truck to decide where the codes align with the equipment to sort out all of the letters. Sometimes they leave out codes like steering wheel position and body type. Just to help I guess.

Well, was $980aud in parts for that specific reason. This is my 11th order from overseas suppliers totalling around $10k AUD, and haven't been hit with GST/import fees.

Yeah, their website isn't good for finding parts. To be honest, I always use TOYOTA | Japan Parts EU - http://japan-parts.eu/ to lookup/find part numbers for my vehicle, then just put the part number in Tosshin to check the price.

Anyway, My latest order arrived today. It was placed on 3rd of March at 5pm Friday afternoon and arrived on Friday 17th March at 10am, so exactly 2 weeks from order to delivery. (Order was shipped out on the 9th).

This is how it arrived...

Pretty happy with the packaging, no damage to any of the parts and no real "free space" (meaning not paying shipping charges for excess packaging).
Am very confident the parts are genuine Toyota....

Edit - Again, not saying everyone should use them or anything... Just my experience has been really positive so far and its a good alternative to some of the places in Dubai which do seem to take longer if they have to get parts from Japan anyway. I could have had the order faster if I paid for Fedex/DHL, but honestly I am happy with a 2 week turn around. Oh and FYI the shipping on that size box was $98 which for a 1 week delivery from Japan is pretty damn reasonable in my opinion.

It probably doesn't for you. I think all the references to GST above are by Aussies.

GST is applied to all imported goods by Australian Tax office. A lot of smaller purchases will fly under the radar, if value of goods exceeds $1000 customs will charge import duties, and if it escaped GST being charged at point of sale, they'll add GST too.

Big Aussie retailers got all twisted about online sellers like eBay and Amazon cutting into their customer base. Instead of lifting their game and offering quality online shopping services, they lobbied the government to have GST applied to foreign purchases shipped to Aussie purchasers to "level the playing field".

So now, we pay a penalty on exchange rates, huge freight costs, and GST on stuff that often isn't even available in Australian stores
