My big ass f250 was towed a few months ago. But i used my insurance. Not aaa.
Is your truck that much heavier than a regular f250/f350?

While I’m at it.

Made an appointment at a diesel shop for the exhaust leak on my f250.

The guy (owner) quickly identifies the exhaust noise coming from the flex joint on the up pipe (Y pipe). Cool. Easy enough. I already knew that was the problem.
Here is the problem. We go inside and he begins to try to sell me a EGR delete kit $150.00.
I tell him. I already have that done?!?!?

He points to the solid up-pipe in the kit and tells me that’s what I need. Says he can get just the pipe so I don’t have to buy the whole kit.
Then will charge me $100 for an up pipe that I already have. And $350 labor to “replace it”.

I am not a diesel mechanic and certainly no expert. But how do people like this stay in business?

He is supposed to call me to schedule a day for me to bring he truck in. But there is no way in hell I am letting him near my truck. Especially when he can’t even tell the difference between a pipe that is in the shape of a Y and one that is straight. And a diesel mechanic that can’t identify that the EGR delete has been done to a 6.0 diesel. Which is pretty damn common.

Anyway. I am going to do what I always end up doing. Watch a s*** load of YouTube videos and figure out how to do it my dam self.

No, it's not. Maybe that's what I need to do, get towing through my insurance company. Good idea, I'll follow up with them tomorrow.

They stay in business because most people are gullible. This is how people get the idea that diesels are "expensive". Sure, diesel injectors are more expensive, as are a few other things, but scumbag shops like that are the real problem imho.

I've got parts you can have off my parts rig if you want them, and can lend a hand to do the repair if you'd like my man.

Thanks Johnny,

I watched a few YouTube videos last night and have a pretty good idea of what I need to do.
If I have any questions or if I get stuck I will call you and hopefully you can walk me through it.

My plan is to first retighten everything on both up pipes. If that doesn’t fix it, I will proceed to try to use a mirror and flashlight to look for cracks on the flex joints on he up pipes.

I will proceed from there depending on what I find.

If something is just loose. Cool. If the y pipe does indeed have a crack at the flex joint I will take the turbo off and then take the y pipe out and replace it with a better aftermarket version I found online.

Del,
If you have a shopvac that can be a blower, set it on the tailpipe and a spray bottle with soapy water can help identify loose connections or leaks. That’s how I found the ones in my 80

I have the aaa Premier for the long distance trouble, if encountered. Also have the insurance towing - only used it twice, once for 20 miles ($65.00), once for 15 miles ($125.00) - for residential auto coverage it's $6.00 a year per car for me and I don't have to carry it on every car if I don't want..... It's been super easy to use - I just email them the receipt, then physically mail it to them, and the checks have shown up within two weeks max.

AAA has changed a lot in the last few years. We're 20+ year Premier members and have had several incredibly challenging service calls in the last year or two. One driver was short of requiring blood work and tax returns to tow a covered vehicle of ours. Several denied service calls like detailed here.

The winner though is with our most recent renewal, they sent us 2 cards instead of 3. A quick look showed my daughter's renewal card was omitted so I called to inquire and found out they simply refused to provide service to her any longer. WTF. When I pushed for an explanation I was told they are now doing annual reviews and if any member has a certain number of calls during their year of coverage, there are new metrics being used to deny service going forward. My daughter had four calls over a 12 month term, two were lock outs, one was dead battery and one was a less than 10 mile tow.

I used to love AAA, recommended them to everyone. Not any longer.

Used to be a supervisor at a AAA call center. That is a new one on me but it has been a long time since I worked there.
AAA has never covered lifted/slammed vehicles or anything a F450, K/C4500 or above (they do have a business membership in some states that will). Despite a lot of lobbying by me that if we could tow a F350 we could do a 4 and 550 it never changed. That said... most of the time it doesn't matter. The only time it seems to pop is when they are slammed busy or the contractor that shows up doesn't want to deal with it. They are independent contractors and get paid less for AAA calls than they would for a non AAA call. So if they are being lazy or have another call they could be making for more money around there they will dump it knowing that they can because AAA will back it. It sucked because I was the one who normally got the very angry customer at that point. I would try every way I could to work it out where they would get service but sometimes there was just nothing I could do.

One time because a member was on the boarder of contractor areas I changed his order from 450 to 350 and had him remove the F450 tags and sent a different contracting company out there so we could tow him 180 miles to his house. I do have AAA still and but knew with my 80 there was a good chance it wasn't going anywhere if I needed it. The road serivce is a huge money looser for AAA in the red every year because every call (this was back when I worked there) cost us $40 and the service only cost the customer $43 (basic service... plus and premier will loose much more if a full tow is used just once). Average call per customer was over 1 per year. So we were essentially losing $7 most years for our 6 million customers in Southern California. Its only there as a foot in the door for the insurance and travel part of the company. Only reason i'm saying this is why most supervisors that work for the road service don't have a huge incentive to try and keep a few customers here and there. Sadly with Johnny's case the 450's and up aren't covered under RV service which again is dumb in my opinion.

If you can get similar service through your insurance i'd say go for it.

Just went to renew my membership, was enlightened that I have been paying for premier RV, for nothing . RV doesn’t cover any trailer but camping trailer, not what I was told 4 years ago when I signed up for RV . Also said will not cover lifted trucks.

Every time I have used AAA they fxxxed something up and the contractor pointed to AAA and AAA pointed to the contractor. So after spending more then what paid, I dropped them. They still mail a s***-ton of paper to my house at least once a month.

Both of our daily drivers are covered by manufacturer roadside assistance.

Had to get it for my daughters car .

IDK last time I used @GLTHFJ60 's AAA they treated me well. Didn't even question why the white 60 series was a yellow 44.

What?? They specifically said that Premium RV would cover a lifted truck. Jesus.

I hate it when a company policy is both interpreted and enforced differently by the people who have to explain that policy to customers.
Every company I worked with will do that intentionally so they can't be subject to anything, up for interpretation

It seems every time I have to enter a parking garage that some s***stick in a Suburban is parked in a spot on the corner of an inside right turn, just sticking out a country mile into the lane where it's already difficult to see oncoming traffic. Last night there were two of them in the same garage. Never mind that there were plenty of spaces starting on floor #2. If you happen to be one of these s***sticks, I implore you to suck it up and accept the fact that the world doesn't revolve around your giant vehicle that is probably only used to carry yourself in those 8 seats. Go to a more vacant level where you won't be in the way and take up 2 spaces diagonally, then walk the 150 feet to the elevator while you think of ways to tell everybody how awesome you are for using the common courtesy that is, sadly, no longer expected of a single living soul. Trust me...we'll consider you god-like if you do that. Same goes for 4-door long beds and duallies.
