Nice Rick. I'm just getting going myself. Did OME CC bushings (thanks for the template) and new u-joints in the front this weekend. Man do the stock bushings make some noise when they let go! Going to do PHH, fan clutch, rear axle service and a lube job this week. Noticed that my e-brake wasn't grabbing this weekend too, will dig into that when I to the rear axle.

Is there really any concern about fender flares and mud flaps?

4 new calipers and pads
all new gear lube

I still have to bleed the brakes and rebuild the e-brake with new shoes.

up next is to drain and fill the fan clutch, fix the snorkel and then do something about those missing mud flaps and fender flares.

Been doing a fair share of PM on my truck as well. Replaced all ujoints, changed transfer case fluid, front diff fluid. Seems my rear fill plug is seized so I didn't bother with the rear.

Changed radiator fluid, tried to get some of the air stuck in my brake system out (fail).

Also Through my beat up full sized garvin wilderness rack on the roof so I could have something to mount my awning on.

Threw together a cheap drawer system for the back of my 80 last weekend. Figured the CMCC would be a good chance to try it out. There's plenty of things I'll do different on version 2.0 but I just wanted to throw something together with the supplies I had to see if I could make cooking and storage easier.
 
I'd be going but the Social Security check doesn't come in for another week after that.:hillbilly:
 
Doh! Well I'll have a few Old Miluakees for you and tell a few "Eskimo with a whale under his arm" jokes to the G-man.
 
Truck is wired for the trailer, trailer is painted (thanks to Brooke), and the CB radio is installed. CMCC here I come!! (and I found that pesky squeak.)
 
more Moab workup this weekend. One of the reman calipers had a bad boss so the brakes aren't done.

Looked at the belts and they need to be changed but not before breaking both tensioners.

Swapped in the new drag link. No issues here as I seem to be on a one-a-FG schedule.

Fan clutch was toast so that got changed out

It's getting tight, I might have to return home on Tuesday to finish the brakes to be sure the truck will be ready for the trip in two weeks.

Flares are likely not going to get done.
 
No wrenching, but I got the truck out on the road today and put some miles on it. Going to start driving it more and working out the kinks.

Fix-It List:
• Rebuild front axles
• Fix power steering leak
• Sort out the body bang that might be a top shock nut
• Install CB
• Install the cable for the rear cable locker
• Change out fluids since it's been sitting for 6 months

parts arrive Thursday so I can finish off the flare repair and start loading the truck Friday. We're heading out Friday afternoon. Not all that close I guess.

I did have 1 mysterious no start last week. No click, nothing! Called the wife to drive over and then suddenly it cranked right over and started up.

This truck has been ignored for 5 years and only beat on when I had the time.

Should be an interesting trip.
 
I'm jealous that you will be spending so much time in Colorado doing trails that weren't even open yet this May when we were there.

I highly recommend Fins 'N Things at Moab. You'll get a good feel for the steeps, traction and terrain with less chance of breaking something or falling of the edge of a 1-2000 foot cliff. It is a good warmup before you do the harder stuff. Do Chicken Corners for the views and vertigo, but it isn't any real challenge except to overcome one's fear of heights.

Started working on the FZJ80 recently in anticipation of selling it or doing something really stupid like modifying it and wheeling it.

I acid dipped the rear disc/drums along with all the brake hardware. I had them turned 2-3 years ago, sometime after I bought it, but they had some surface rust even from sitting in the backf the truck. . The brake hardware cleaned up real nice and I have new shoes and pads. Why doesn't Toyota just use an emergency brake that activates the rear pads? Even my FJC has the rear combo disc with drum ebrake.

Unfortunately, I have a tranny fluid leak from one of the cooling lines that go to the radiator. The leak seems to be coming from around the line clamp/support that is up and behind the engine oil pan. That area has some corrosion. Luckily, the lines seem solid above and below that area.

Is there any reason that I can't cut out the corroded section and splice it with some rubber hose? There is rubber hose on the line closer to the radiator, so I would think that would be OK.

Thoughts?
 
fuel tank replacement day!!!
I had a custom fuel cell made up for my fj45 lv should give me about 24 gallons up from the stock 16 but more importantly it hopefully won't leak along all the seems.

Question though it is an alluminum fuel cell and unfortunately I did not see the supplied drain cock in the peanut explosion when i unpacked it. I can only fine brass peacocks at the local Napa and they don't seem to fit more than 3/4 a turn into the 1/4" NPT threads. I have some radiator 1.4 npt drain cocks and they fit great and snug but they are plastic can UI use these on a fuel tank??

Fan belts shouldn't be this hard...
I've got 3 house projects and 3 car projects going on simultaneously so I decided to bite the bullet and let the local garage replace my squeaky fan belts. I take it in and they call back at the end of the day to say that they don't have the belts in stock and they need to go match them up so they need it longer. Two days later they call to say that they are done. I go in and they say that they can't find the belts so they put the old ones back on! GMAFB. I take the old ones off in 15 minutes (like I should have in the beginning) and drive to the nearby Advance. 15 minutes later after the 12 year old behind the counter brings out 3 belts that aren't even close in width or length, I walk out and go to NAPA (like I should have in the beginning). They measure, cross check, 2 belts, DONE. How can a garage and a Auto Parts store not be able to deal with replacing fan belts?
 
Larry what are the stats on your 80? I know someone looking for one.

You should pm me back so you can sell the 80 to a new member that wants a resto project and will wheel the SOB...I have some eskimo pie in the fridge if that'll get you goin.

No imagination or ingenuity. If it ain't a standard application in the computer, they can't figure it out.
 
Julian and Mark, the Newbie already PM'd me. Based on his posts, my 80 doesn't come close to his requirements.
