Couple of quick pictures, some in the dark but Hi-rez. Its a little bright the first time you see it, then it grew on me a bit. It POPS big time in the direct sunlight.
...now if I could find all my parts to put it back together I would be happy camper.

Cleaned up the dash pad and threw a windshield knob on there to see the color contrast.

Mine is not as exciting as the prior posts. I'm finally putting in a Lock Rite in the rear in anticipation of the Halloween Outing in South East NH since Lane (and my antagonist, Junior) is requiring at least one locker. I bought it a couple years ago on FleaBay for 1/2 the price of a new one. While jacking up the rear I noticed the u-bolts on both sides are a bit loose. So, now I have 2 projects.

I opened up the rear late this afternoon. (Don't drop the diff drain plug in the funnel unless you want a mess.) It appears to be an easy install. Pulling everything out is pretty easy and putting in the new parts shouldn't be that much of a challenge, I hope!

Does anyone have a fresh diff gasket they want to sell?

Pat, that looks awsome! Glad to see with all that's going on that you're still focused on the Cruiser. Are the windshield knobs aluminum?

Larry, you didn't pull the diff out of the housing to do the lock right did you? I've never used a gasket on the diff just permatex goo of some flavor or another. I have some cork cover gaskets some where in the barn, if I get over that way I'll look for them.

Yea finishing this thing has become somewhat of a vendetta...

They are, I dont know how long it took the guy to make em, but they are sweet! I bought them about 3+ years ago HA! I dont want to know how long it takes to machine one.

Here is where I got em.

Drum brake work

Getting a good education this week on drum brakes. Replacing the bell cranks, internal ebrake wires, shoes, and wheel cylinders. Pretty nasty in there at first. Looking better...

Come on Randy, all this work and you aren't going to do disc's all around?
Guess you don't love those kids do ya!

Oh sure Lane, pull the "do it for the children" guilt trip on me .

Thought about discs but it's way more spendy and the late model 40s have the ebrake on the axle and no one makes a kit other than TSM. You can use Eldorado calipers with the ebrake option but I hear they're not very good.

My lock rite locker install has hit a BIG snag. Either my thrust washers are toast or missing. Nothing came out when I pulled it apart and removed the side gears. There's way much too big of a gap in the center between the 2 sides. It is supposed to be 5/32" and it is closer to 3/8, they can't even engage at all. Junior was a good sounding board tonight and helped set me straight. I will be checking clearances tomorrow and ordering some washers from Grappone.

BTW, I was at Grappone Toyota today in Concord, NH ordering a diff cover gasket. They quoted close to $13 on the phone and a day wait so I tried to chase one down at Robbins and Sanel's. Neither place, as well as Vip & AutoZone, had one. When I asked the counter man at Grappone if they gave a TLCA or Yankee Toys discount, he came up blank with "I never heard of them". In any case, he did give me a discount and I paid just under $8 for the gasket. Pretty much a $5 discount, quite a big percentage. I was so happy, I ordered a pinion seal.

If anyone is local and avoiding Grappone due to past dealings, try dealing with this guy. I'll get his name tomorrow when I pick up the parts.

While I was there, he mentioned a guy coming in all the time that is doing a restoration on '67 Cruiser. Maybe that was the one at the Gathering?

When I did mine, I found out that toyota sell three different sizes of thrust washers. I pulled mine out of a spare third that I had kicking around, because the ones in my axel were too small. Good luck Al

Good news! I finally located my thrust washers. You were right Junior, they were stuck to the back of the side gears. They were so stuck, I thought they were part of the gear. Plus I was looking for something smaller in diameter. I didn't realize how big they were as I thought they fit into the carrier, not against it.

I reinstalled the LockRite with the washers and the gap is still way too big. I need to decrease the center gap between the lock rite plates by quite a bit, roughly around .75mm to a full millimeter.

I took my washers to Sanel's machine shop for measurement and they are the thinnest Toyota uses, 1.55-1.65mm. Mine actually measured at 1.57. Checking in at Grappone Toyota, there is only one of each size Toyota offers at their Boston warehouse. There are plenty on the WestCoast, but they won't get here until later next week. I ordered a 1.85-1.95mm and a 2.00-2.10mm at Grappone and they will be here tomorrow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will get me well within the Lock-Rite's specs of 3.68-4.32mm. I want them closer to the smaller tolerance to allow for wear. I don't believe there is any problem mixing and matching thicknesses of the washers within a small tolerance due to the amount of "float" within the mechanisms. Time will tell.

I know I'm keeping you folks all awake with this trivia if you are even bothering to follow it, yawn! It's pretty boring for me as well and I want the darn thing done and sealed back up! On the other hand, maybe someone in the club or out there on Mud will learn from my experience

More interesting is that blue LandCruiser, it sure is purty  My Swiss Miss is that color and I hope she'll look that nice someday. (But, it probably won't be me that makes her that way.) My wife is right, I got way over my head with his cruiser obsession. One or 2 might be OK, but 5 is way too many. There's just not enough time to get them all right. I'd rather be wheeling than working on them.

Thanks to all who have contributed.

Junior, thanks for the offer! I already had ordered the cork gasket by the time I saw your post. I've heard bad things about goo (RTV) breaking down from vibration and leaking and my original wasn't leaking a bit. Plus it comes apart pretty clean. It was just under $8 for the correct Toyota OEM, so no biggy.

The new thrust washers (spacers) arrived and I was able to install the lock-rite. The center gap has been reduced substantially and both plates seem to lock and unlock as they should. However, I'm concerned about the fact that one spacer is about .15mm thicker than the other. The additional thickness over my original spacers makes the pinion pin a snug fit. Instead of slipping into place, I had to give it some raps with the handle of a screwdriver to get it in. There's not much give. I think Aussie Locker gives some clearance specs between side plates and the pinion pin, I haven't found any yet for Lock-Rite except the manual states the pinion pin should slip in or can be tapped in. I'm concerned that mine is too tight. On the other hand, it might wear in OK and give me longer life because the center gap is at the lower end end of tolerances.

Rick has some other spacers for me to try (THANKS!!!), so I'm going to do that unless I find some more info online that what I have now is OK to run.
