No wrenching today, I do have oil and filters for all 3 cars ready to go though.

Also went and bought a basketball hoop to mount on the garage, give me an excuse to run around more and maybe even improve my pitiful bball skills.

I have mods to do on the 40 but I have to get the ole ladys heap to stay running,,,

Trying to track down a slight vibration and droning sound between 45-70mph since the install of the ARB lockers and the new 4.88 gears. Interestingly enough a very knowledgable service manager at the dealership spent many years playing around with off-road trucks and pointed out that I may have changed the pinion angle a bit. The symptoms he described matched mine exactly.

I've now ordered a set of All-Pro upper and lower adjustable control arms that should hopefully allow me to correct for this.....

I hope this does the trick :hmm:

Whoa there cowboy! Unless you changed the lift height of the truck the pinion angles have remained the same. Your problem is unlikely a change in pinion angle.

I explained that to the guy. I did put a lift on the truck a year ago and did not have the problem. He said that some times the new pinion can be slightly off, even a half of degree. Just enough to cause the u-joints to bind. The new pinion was slightly different and required a new (supplied) pinion flange.

The good news is even if the control arms do not solve the problem, I really wanted to upgrade the stock flimsy arms anyway.

We have narrowed down that the diffs are set up properly and not the problem. Any other thoughts? I have greased the u-joints.

By re-gearing all you did is speed up the drive shaft RPMs. I doubt that 4.88s with larger than stock tires really made that big a difference, maybe 8% increase.

How did you confirm the diffs were set up properly?

Yes. I bought master overhaul kits including bearings and bought a solid spacer vs. the crush sleeve.

So the FJ45 is offically off the road for a restoration. A couple weeks ago I pulled the tranny with KrazyFJ and I have been busy blasting some small parts. I pulled the steering apart and made plates to plate the frame for an FJ60 powersteering conversion. I rebuilt a 2F with the help of Rick and Junior went through the t-case and replaced a couple things in the tranny for me.

I'm going to go with lights from a later model cruiser. Can some one get some measurements for me. I need to know a measurement from the outside of the frame to the outside of the bracket in the picture so that I can space it corretly and not have the light hit the frame.

you need to start a resto thread here. will be fun to watch!

anyone have an extra 38 mm thrust washer or two from an fj62 or late 86/87 fj60?
couldn't find enough pieces of the other for a decent photo

Are they the same as the ones out of a 40? I have some extra.

Idler shaft fly out the back of the case? That happened to me a couple of years ago. Talk about a PITA.

A little update on the 45

Pulled the seats last week. Need to get steel to make a base for the new bench seat.

Pulled the remainder of the propane set up out of the 45 with Eric last night.

Took the plates that I cut for the frame and figured out where I was going to mount the RHD FJ60 box and drilled the holes.

I will try to post pictures later. I would like to get some input from what people think on the placement of the 60 box.

Read Whatleys piece in Trails, pretty sure he gives a good idea of where it should be.
I can snap pics of mine if you need them.

This weekend I'm doing the front end service, new rotors, new pads, wheel bearings if needed, j springs, 1 inch spacer up front, l shocks and replacing the leaking power steering loop with a b&m trans cooler....I'll be sleeping in the garage!
