Today I tore down the front axle for a rebuild. Tomorrow I'll change the rotors and pads and put it all back together. Mabrodis is coming over to help. Damn, I got to remember to pay him for his Toffee!

Thanks for the photos, I was just reading up on the tech articles to get an idea of what I might be facing (looking for 96-97 w/around 100K)

Hey Cruisin:

If you do a search under 'front axle' job in the 80's-tech section you will get pages of good info. on this job. Print out what you need, get the FSM (if you don't already have it) and dive right on in. I'm a  kind o guy, but just diving in an doing the work really made me confident about my ability to handle working on this vehicle.

Eric's write up is pretty good with pictures and good info. I have a bunch of pics. up as well and I'd be happy to share more with you if you like. Drop a PM.

Get the parts from Dan. He'll get you everything you need, will give you good suggestions, and is a good person to talk to about this stuff.

Best of luck.

The only thing that doesn't come in C Dans kit is the outer wheel bearings. The knuckle bearings and all the seals and gaskets are there. Most people re-use the wheel bearings. Just in case you wanted to add and have everything new.

I just started my birf repack late this afternoon. Messy job. I've spent more time cleaning than I have wrenching.

I'll get back at it in the morning after a trip to the store for more degreaser (varsol).

I bought 5 cans of Brake cleaner and that is working great for cleaning and degreasing. This is something I have never done before and its really not hard, just messy and time consuming. I used the FSM and a write-up from the tech section. Beno was right on with the advice.

I bought 6 cans. Another thing that has come in handy is a box of disposable nitrile gloves. My hands are actually clean!

Your hands dissentigrated, or the gloves?

Yeah, I had to keep changing gloves. Mabrodis came over to help and Ige (Nuclearlemon) came over to supervise and we finished the Front axle rebuild, new rotors and 100 series pads. Only problem we had was the second seal (inner axle seal) we put in went in cockeyed and was damaged. Ige ran over to the Toyota dealer and they gave her the wrong part, she had to make a second trip.

It was interesting that the drivers side looked like it had just been done (color of grease) and the pass side looked like it needed a rebuild.

Thanks Mark and Ige
