to split rim or not?

I'll throw this in the pot. I really want to go to 16" rims for the better tire selection.

I don't really know about that. maybe, problem is the rims being narrow kinda limit the larger sizes you would run on toyota split rim. I mean how many different size tires or what tire would you run on it that you can't get in a 15?

x 2

Except from my point of view, at least 50% of the stuff on MUD concerning splitrims is "misinformation".

agreed. There is alot of spit rim misinformation here

.. I love this Troopy! ..

Yep. Sure is nice. ....Congrats.

...So let me get it 100% right, these tires have tubes in them and that is the only way a split rim will run?...

Correct. Where the "ring" mates with the main part of the wheel cannot ever be made airtight - so tubes are a necessity.

...What are my tire choices if I need to replace them? ...

Well I like 235/85 R16:

If you want to run hubcaps you would need the little clips welded on to your wheels to hold them.

AFAIK you can run tubes in a tubeless tire on a split rim.

Exactly the same tyres are run with tubes (on splitrims) as are run tubeless on ordinary rims. There is no need to manufacture them differently.

Matt,
That's a beautiful troopy - honestly I would stick with the split rims since you're wanting a stock look. Throw on the clips and get some hubcaps and you'd look really sharp. I'm not a purist myself (I have an SM465, SR, and a lot of other changes,) but your rig looks really clean, and would look excellent kept stock w/original hardware.

Just my $.02

Changing a tire on a split rim is in no way easier than changing a tire on a regular rim. I mean for God's sakes you need a freakin cage to do that. Personally I went with non-split rims, but to each his own I guess.

being in a Discount tire 3 times in less than 2 weeks, I witnessed tires on standard rims being aired up in cages. I was told by the manager that it was store policy

just saying:meh:

As for safety...they are not your typical "trucker" split rim...they are split ring design...IMO pretty safe when you use the typical procations when mounting...in all the countries that run toyota split rims for these past what 30+ years...I have yet to hear of a single fatality...or injury for that matter.

I've never had a tyre shop in NZ (when I used to use them) mention anything about safety risk (or use a safety cage either).

When these toyota split-rim wheels are in good nick I believe it would be next-to-impossible to have a "ring" fly off............(I know of no specific injury/death cases involving un-molested genuine-Toyota-landcruiser split-rims in any part of the world though.)...............

I just put new splits on my BJ42 and it was a piece of cake after reading all the split rim threads on this forum. Always use precaution like you would anything else. I ordered my tubes and liners from a local goodyear tire place and on they went. Looking at how these things are designed I think it would take a heck of a lot to come off? I guess the cons wold be that they are heavy but other than that I think I will enjoy and they look great.

R

Also keep in mind that we are not inflating large tires (lots of surface area) to high PSI... small tires, low pressure... use a length of chain looped a couple of times through the center of the rim and around the lock ring and the tire and if you *DO* pop it loose, no big deal.
Mark...

x2 these are not the same rims as heavy equiptment use or from semi's .....
has anybody even heard of one coming off when inflating? ....and if it were to come off I refer you to marks comment above :)

For me it is the selection of 30-32 inch narrow tires you can run. I'm a fan of keepimg the tires inside the fenders. Yet I don't want to run the 33x9.5 BFG's. I've run through a couple of sets of the BFG All Terrains now in the standard 15 inch size, and I have been disapointed with the life of the tire. They have all developed bulges in the tread as they near the end of their life. I want to run a 235/85R16 to gain some additional tire size, yet retain stock suspension and closer to stock performance. But I will also get a load range E tire, and a better selection of all terrian tire treads. What I really want to run is a Dunlop Radial Rover RT, good commercial grade all terrain. Better yet would be a Toyo M-55, but they are pricey. Currently running them on our Ford F-250's at the surface coal mine I work at. They are the best tires we have ever run out here. And I have tested them thuroughly in all conditions, that type of tread is quite impressive.

Of course, I haven't run the Dunlops yet, but that is the tire I want to get, as the 40 needs new tires. So this is all speculation, but for my wheeling and use, this is the route I want to go.

Ok.. I see what your after. The ability to get a e load range tire is nice on something like a 45 pickup or troopy that may see heavier weights too.

I am running the 255/85/r16 Toyo M-55's on my split rims...very impressive tire...they have worn down about 1/2 the tread and they have about 21,000 miles on them.

the ones that come to my mind are 1100r16, 900r16 and 825r16 (38.7", 36" and 34" tires) Michelins XL and XZL's not the best choice ...but they are large and recommended to fit on 6" rims.

255/85R16 is a great tire choice as its a true 33" tire and skinny.

.....but.....your right there are alot more choices for the 15" in tire sizes....and more common in the usa...

750x16 seem to be the standard world wide :meh:

Continental used to make a fantastic skinny in 8.25R16 with a 14 Ply rating that was perfect on a split. It was about 34" tall and stuffed into fenders on mild lifts. I ran them for quite a while including a trip to Rubithon. The splits worked fine aired down but as was said before they are not a bead lock. Having tubes does prevent losing beads when a tire is pushed away from the bead. I have no qualms about mounting them. The hysteria surrounding splits comes from an inferior design that was used in the trucking industry in the 60s. Toyota puts split rims on Land Cruisers from the factory to this day.

rim differences

1st pic is Toyota Semidrop Center Rim with removable flange on the ring this is what makes it much safer than most other split rims

2nd pic is Flat Rim *unsafe style*

3rd pic is the Semidrop Center Rims (left one non-removable flange *unsafe style* and removable flange on right)

most overseas countries are still running splits on new Landcruisers as I just seen recently in the Middle East. I bought new splits, read the threads here on mud, asked the same questions you are asking and it was downright simple and fun, we took the precautions and love the look, I am running 235/85-16 Dunlops. I belevie that 45 you like is running the 255/ 85-16's which is a little taller and wider IIRC?? approx 34" tall I think?

Thanks for the input all and I like how you put it Roberto- down right fun! I am going to try for the look/size of the green truck pic and see if I can find someone local to help me learn, even if I have to pay a shop extra.

GCR Tire centers should be able to hook you up: GCR INTERIOR

where are you located?

I am in NW Florida panhandle...

Closest GRC is 1.5 hours from me, I am in Fort Walton Beach/ Destin

show me a shop (other than some "mom & pop" ) that doesn't "air up" every tire in a cage today?

Every tire?

Tires Plus in Minnesota....

Discount Tire in Minnesota....

Tires get mounted on the wheels on a rotary table, which is part of the tire machine; beads are seated while being aired up on this machine and valve stem cores are installed while the tire is on the table as well. There is not a cage of any kind around these machines.

Final air pressure is usually set while the tire is on the machine still.
