Pros :
I can drive through 4 feet of water.
Looks moderately cool
Better air flow into the engine?

Cons
When am I ever gonna drive through 4 feet of water.
3 inch hole in my quarter panel that cost the insurance companies 5k to fix
Something else to break.

Snorkel owners and implementers. Where you at? Is this a stupid mod?

I love a snorkel.

Better air flow into the engine?

Cooler airflow into engine. Not more or better flow.

Cons

When are you ever going to need a fire extinguisher?

You can't put a new quarter panel on? What kind of pink panty rig are you running, anyway? Go out, dent it up a little and then readjust your expectations. ;)

Something else to break.

The available snorkels will be tougher than your rig. They don't "break". And even if they did, all you need to do is replace it.

Yes, it's a stupid mod. But it's a mod that really makes an LC, imo. Plus women will constantly ask about "your thing that goes up".

I'm about to do it and cooler airflow was the reason I got one. If you have to ask all those questions than maybe it's not for you.

I grew up on a working farm, and every single piece of equipment we had, had a snorkel with a pre-cleaner. Every. Single. One.

In hot and high particulate environments, snorkels help, or they wouldn't put them on industrial and farm equipment.

I think they look dumb and I avoid water crossings, so I elected not to get one. I also hate explaining stuff to people.

The only reason I would consider one is the "fire extinguisher" argument mentioned above. Better to have and not need something than need and not have. I just think most people look like posers or punks (depending on age) when I see them on the road, just based on the fact that well over 90% of snorkel owners view it as a cosmetic upgrade and will probably never need it.

my 07 FJC died 8 days after owning it because of water and a snorkel would have most likely saved it.

I don't know the situation, but it seeeeems like maybe the driver could have done something to avoid this situation. Maybe not.

On the snorkel - if you want one just get it. If you hate it take it off and buy a used fender. Or buy a used fender, drill the hole, mount the snorkel, and save your factory fender.

Of course a snorkel is only the beginning of prep for deep water. Diff breathers, E-locker breathers, trans and trans case breathers all need to be extended if you prefer not to suck water into these components when they quickly cool during a dip and then need to come apart for PM, new lubrication.

Not to mention a lot of dialectric grease. Or the ultimate water-crossing mod--a diesel power plant.

It seems like the weather events across the country are making it seem more rational. I would probably not need one for wheeling as I tend to wheel arid areas. However I have seen flash floods and states across the country on the news with alot of vehicles dead in the water. Could make the difference between getting home to your family or waiting for some dude in a John boat to rescue you while you sit on your roof lol

Do it, all the cool kids do it. Did mine yesterday...

yes and no, loading a boat in the river and the ramp was slick with algae and mud. no way to get up the ramp and i went in. by time someone was able to pull me up the engine was flooded and the truck was a total loss. if i had a snorkel i could have kept it running and made it out alive.

i never plan on using a seat belt but i still have it on ;)

Oh that sucks! I was picturing more of a "hold my beer and watch this" type of incident.

There's a shortage of perfect fenders in this world. It would be a pity to damage yours

But your rig so do......as you wish. :D
OMG dork alert

Wait,wait,wait! - I thought this was a snorkel thread, you didn't say anything about...fenders.

nope, hit the water and started sliding in. was all over once the boat started to float and picked the rear of the truck up enough to unload the tires lol. was only 4 feet deep but it killed a new truck i hadnt even made the first payment on.

the worst part was my buddies in the back seat flipping out trying to open those stupid rear doors. after that day i swore i would never buy something that you couldnt open the rear doors without the front open again.

HAH! I can see him now. Yea the rear doors aren't great.

Anyway, to the OP, get a snorkel. You need it.
