I just drove from Massachusetts to Panama in a 99 with a stock tank and 4 jerry cans strapped to the roof. Not once did I actually use the gas on the roof. The fuel infrastructure in Central America is actually quite good (on par with the US)

Moral of the story… your stock tank will get you to the Darien Gap (but it’s nice knowing you’ve got some extra in reserve)

That sounds like an interesting trip, do you have a thread on here or the details?

And yes the stock tank is enough for most road trips but a long range tank cuts the number of stops in half! And is definitely safer than having 20 gallons of fuel strapped to the roof
