Now is the time to commit one way or the other. My 62 is amidst minor bodywork and repaint and I've got the itch to shorten the old beast. I have the tools and time, but I'd like to see one up close and ask a few questions before I make the first cut. This one's a good candidate in my judgement.
This is pretty much what it looks like at the moment. It spent its first 6 years in Utah so there are minor rust issues lurking and it was hailed on in Oklahoma. I removed the vinyl woodgrain, the aftermarket roof rack and trim and welded up 28 holes in the roof. The frame is solid. The interior is okay, but could use some work. Only 160K on it. I'm starting an autobody night class next week, so I'll have paint booth access for the next 3-4 months. I've read numerous threads involving bobbed 60's, but didn't notice any that were near me. Does anyone know of anyone that's done one between San Francisco and Sacramento?? Maybe Stockton?

Thanks, GDA

You'll get many opinions. Personally, I can't bear to see a Land Cruiser cut up.

It ends up being quite a bit of work.. And ends up costing more than you might expect. But I love mine

I think the bobbed units are what Toyota should have made. Stock configuration has too much overhang.

The main reason i did mine was to get rid of a large portion of the rust.
I am glad that 10"was enough to do the job, still have some cargo room and the departure angle is way better.

sorry i cant help but ill hafta keep you in mind when i have the time to do mine

if you plan on doing some serious wheeling then I say bob it ... but if its going to be used as a soft roader then don't bother... I am really kickin myself for not chopin mine... and now the rear bar seam's to be hitting a lot whenever I go up or come down off a rock step and I am running 38's....baby 's got to much back for my liking... I have got big time cruiser envy for the riggs that have gone the chop on this site... so if u wanna play hard on the rocks I say chop chop chop you will be glad u did ...It's to late for me.... but I wish I had gone the chop...:bang:.......that's my 2 c ...

She's got a lot of back. If I had axles, springs, and such on hand, maybe an extended wheelbase would be the way to go. But, I like the looks of the bobbed wagons. Plus I'd like to have a little less challenge on the Rubicon.
I've got sliders waiting to be put on. Then I'll have to fab up some bumpers, SOA, probably 1-tons, seats, etc. Time. $$$$ One thing at a time.
Time to figure out what to do with all the gas in the tank... Read more bob threads... Maybe go visit Mudrak's shop.
Thanks for the thoughts. I'll post progress, buy a star...

I think trailblazer's got the right idea. If you're going to be wheeling it hard, it'd be a good idea to chop it right and gain all of that departure angle. If it's going to be mostly a roadie, I would leave it as is. It really is one of the characteristics of the 60 series.

SOME ASKED ABOUT A FUEL TANK

This is what i did with my fuel tank, less 10".
A bob of more than 10" would not be worth the effort.
I still don't know what the capacity is.
Less 10''.webp

When you get done do you want to come do mine. I'd love to have mine done but I lack the skills. And I could go crazy as mine is sitting on coils so I don't need anything in the rear.

Baxter650 I need you to come fab up my fuel tank. Boy it looks like you do good work.
