Hmmmm....wonder if a 3UZ 5.7 would fit in there?? @GTSSportCoupe what do you think?
Stick a Magnussen 2650 on there, make a kick ass tow vehicle
When you’re empty, you’d have a hard time keeping the wheels from spinning… :D

Although plenty of power could be had for a lot less money than a Magnussen 2650.

I remember when that truck was first posted before Colin had his way with it. It was cheaper then, and still at the 12HT in it!

If I do a swap it'll be into my LJ78 at this point I think. Just no time. My son is starting to show interest in it for his first vehicle....which means it might stick around when I get something new for myself! That would be great, as I could still use occasionally for exploring.

Got something in mind for the new wheels?
I have an ongoing internal debate about what to drive. It's a bit absurd commuting in a 60, but switching to a VW or civic wouldn't really save me enough fuel to justify the hassle, (although it's getting close) and the 60 is just so damn useful.

Haha, yeah, I've been debating for years too (as you see can see in this post if you even get through it).

Basically though, it's the towing that's the main area where the LJ78 falls short. But family wants to keep camping for a few years. LJ78 power's good actually, it's just the little heat producing nuclear reactor in the front that gives me anxiety every trip. Sort of ruins the whole camping experience. Going to tall mushy springs wasn't a great idea for towing stability either, so the whole setup is a bit sketchy. To top all that off, the truck pushed more coolant into reservoir than normal on a recent trip to the interior (up to hope slide, then anarchist out of osoyoos) despite the cool weather. Not really a cracked head symptom as I never loose coolant (more likely a bit of leak on the MLS head gasket from insufficient torque job on my engine stand). Anyhow, sick of trying to improve/repair the thing and make it do work it's not meant for. Honestly don't have time for the next while to even work on it. (It does run absolutely perfectly for everything I ask of it on the Island besides towing).

So, back to new wheels. Would love a TDI Landcruiser like: 80 series with the 1HDFT, 100 series with 1HDFTE, 70 or 200 series with 1VD-FTV. But I just can't come to terms spending $40-70k plus. Was born cheap and can't seem to get over it.

Thought about staying diesel in a domestic pick-up; but I think maintenance aspect on those quickly nulls any fuel savings. Especially with my driving cycle.

Unfortunately 4-Runners, GX470, Tacoma's are distasteful to me given their popularity amongst certain crowds. Fuel savings is marginal over getting same sized vehicles with a v8 honestly.

Can't stomach most cheap domestic SUVs/pick-ups.

So that brings me to gas Tundras, 100 or 200 series (cruiser or lexus). I only drive 10,000km a year. Honestly a gas vehicle will motivate me to get my fat ass on a bicycle for the 7km away my work is!

Longest answer ever, but I lean towards 2008+ Tundra crew cab 4x4 short box. Very solid trucks with no issues and can do more than I ever want. I'd love an LX570 or USA cruiser version honestly. LX570 looks gross, but hugely capable and comes with built in Japan quality which the Tundras lack. They're still pricey at closer to $30k minimum, so Tundra is more likely.

Something like this maybe. Haven't had time to look at it yet. Tundra's on the Island are still way overpriced, but mainland is better.

Just an after thought, but I have thought about the heavy duty quad cab Dynas with 15BF or the big Hino motors (not to be confused with light duty ones with s*** 'L' engines). Ones I like need work like a pick-up box though. Just don't have time to piss around with that. Also only the 2wd ones are reasonably priced.

Also thought about a Japanese D4D 120 series Prado (diesel version of GX470), but they are pricey for what they are, and still have the A343 auto instead of the proper A750 the other countries got.

Come buy my 80. I need to free up cash to finish some renovations.

Haha, it has tempted me. Looking for something under 200,000km tho. Also I'm not sure I trust the A442 for heavy towing duty....although 1993+ year is better I think than the earlier ones.

Meh, it's not like those HDT's are torque monsters by any means. Valve body, better torque converter and trans cooler should do just fine.

Does it have those upgrades already? I don't have time; need to buy something ready to go.

Yeah I could see a less stressful towing thing being nice. I'm always amazed at how your Prado survives haha

A friend of mine has one of the smaller duramax chevs, nice little truck but he's looking at trading to something bigger like a Sequoia because of kids and baseball.

His truck is actually worth more now than when he bought it new. Kinda nuts

For me it'd be mileage but also just something that's a bit more fun to drive. Maybe even quiet and comfortable. Crazy talk I know.

Still not sure what that is.

WRX would be fun, but you might as well drive a v8 with their mileage.

And I'm cheap too 😂

We're trying to hammer down the mortgage over the next year and a half before we have to re-up.

So, I keep driving the 60.😔

Went super hard on mortgage the last few years ourselves and just finished it. Oddly it's not as relieving as I thought it would be. Next big push will be things I put off too long like new windows and roof on the house. Interior updates too; as much as I love all original 1978, lol.

Your 60 is awesome for fuel econo and as a work horse. But I could see you wanting something a little more fun and comfy to drive to work, haha. AWD/4WD a must for you I guess. I always like the WRX's....but don't see many on the road anymore. I don't think the motors were that durable under boost. Oddly some of the early 2000s 911's (some are awd) have become pretty cheap. I think they're actually ok as long as 'IMS bearing' is done. But I've never actually maintained a german car. mpg is probably okay on the highway.

Not sure. I just roll it out of the garage when i'm home from work. Nice, clean, smooth driving truck. I'm sure i'll regret it when it goes as they seem to be getting harder to find in relatively good condition these days.

I've been trying to crush that mortgage thing also. Tired of it.

Do you still have a second one? Vaguely remember you picked up a locked one I thought.

4wd isn't really 100% necessary. I guess it'd depend on if I kept the 60.

Tho if I sold it it'd probably be with a 3b and a semi float rear axle 🤣

I keep browsing older cars but nothing has really caught my eye.

There was a 70's bug for sale that tempted me. It had all the things I lusted after 30 years ago...stroker engine dellorto carbs, it literally was teenage me's dream bug.

I managed to resist tho haha

Starline windows should be your first call. Call others but i know who’ll you’ll be hiring.

Excellent service and fair pricing.

Yeah that one won't bother me if it gets a few bruises. Just might get out there again with the kids, fishing rods, camping etc... Kinda hard wheeling again when work requires my truck to constantly be in 4wd. Last thing i want to do when i'm home.
