My phone died in the middle of taking photos, so the last 4 are from my Go Pro, I can take some better ones if anyone needs.

Correct. Exactly. Maybe you'll take
Your time and get it to work better than I did but I had a ton of plastic and fender trimming to do. I also hacked up that boxy resonator and had to use parts of it to make the silicone hose go all the way to the filter box intake elbow.

I will mess with this tomorrow night, my snorkel is not hooked up to the airbox right now because that rubber tube that comes ith the kit was too short, dumb.

BillZ: nice! Your snorkel head has a gap between the roof and the bottom of the head right? Mine does too. Also, you just have drilled a larger hole than the template indicated to get the inner elbow flange through? I drilled exactly what the template said and it didn't even come close to fitting. I also had the issue of the hose being two inches too short so I used the resonator tube cut it and that did the trick.

Yes, the gap is about the same from the roof as the gap from the A Pillar, it looks pretty good.

I used a razor and scribed the hole into the paint, then used a dremel to cut out the big hole, then I used a file to clean up the big hole, and I got lucky and made the hole almost perfect. I was pretty close to the scribed line though.

Muddy, I know your template ripped, I think your template was clocked a bit counter clockwise and a tad higher than mine. I taped my template right at the top of the fender and tried to line it up across all the fender lines.

I think your big hold height is pretty close to the same as mine, maybe a tad higher. But if you look at the front mounting holes they look rotated, it could be the camera angles too. Dunno anyway, between the two of us, others should be able to decide if they want to try this. Not bat, but does need a bit of extra work, and don'l lock your wrench in there..... :)

Honestly, I think you guys have big ones to try this!! I really admire your willingness to chop into your fender with only a wing and a prayer template! This makes me more interested in the safari style one, as they have one that is supposed to clear the antenna. Again, hats off to you for being Power Ful guinea pigs!

Your hole is so clean. I have a hole saw somewhere big enough to have cut the hole but it's in Michigan and I'm in Iowa. So I had to dremel it too. You are an artist my friend. I ended up not using the mounting holes to mount the lower portion because they didn't line up at all. So right now the two pieces (elbow and snorkel) are glued together. I have no plans to take it out. If I do, I'll be sad.

Thanks for the writeups and explanations, they are really helpful. Question for Billz - Would you be able to keep the oem antenna, or is there not enough room inside? Also could you take a close up picture of the gap between the roof and the top of the snorkel?

Thank you!

You can not keep the OEM antenna with this style, the inner box sits right where the antenna sits, it has nothing to do with the antenna hole. The Safari style will let you keep the antenna, because the snorkel tube connects with the air box from the outside, this style connects from the inside.

I live in town, and the antenna that is in the rear window (we have two ya know) seems to be picking up NPR just fine. I expect on road trips it will be much more of an issue. Based on what happens, I'll pick up an amplified antenna, otherwise BT streaming should work well too (hopefully my BT FM transmitter is still getting picked up)

Anyone need a good OEM antenna? $15, I did cut the lead :/

I'll take some better pics tonight.

Thanks for all the kind words! Muddy, I took three passes with the dremel AFTER removing the template. One to score my mark, then a deeper pass, then cleaning up the cut and breaking through , then I filed off all the burrs.

I also don't miss my antenna. We listen to pandora etc now.

My modified inner fender tube. Some better fitment pics. I've got a video I need to upload too.

Ok, here's a vid. Not sure how helpful it is, and I'm not a professional! Lol. I test fit that intermediate tube and then measured and cut the supplied rubber hose. Also, opening the sunroof and flooring it soungs cool :)

Just follow up, weather here cooled a bit, enough to drive on the highway with the sunroof open, can't hear any extra whistling or buffeting at speed.

And how many extra hp? ;)

Thanks for all the writeups guys - wish I had gotten to mine now but at least I'll feel better about that first cut into the fender... <wince>

None that I can tell but when you get on it you can certainly hear the trottle body alot better :) Also, getting tons of dbl takes and "hey, what's that?" at stop lights :)

With the spring-like weather right now I was going to give installing mine a shot finally, but re-read the input from @BillZ260 and @Muddy Bean and decided to prep a little more. <thank you guys!>

@BillZ260 any idea your final hole diameter?

For those interested, here are the installation "instructions":

TJM Type Instructions.jpg

@BillZ260 or @Muddy Bean - on the hose length issue, directions and my piece say it is 15.75" long - Muddy I think you said needed to be 2" longer? Not seeing from your video or these instructions why 18" would be necessary unless you were eliminating the original inner guard tube? (sorry if I'm being dense there) I am inclined to just buy a length of another hose, maybe this McMaster-Carr

Last question for now, how did you secure the outer and inner hard plastic pieces? They show a hose clamp but no way that is going to do anything on this rigid plastic IMHO - is it just friction fit? Did you silicone caulk it maybe? Not trusting the inner not to vibrate loose over time...

Well Dave, yours came with a lot more detailed instructions than mine! All I got was the template and a bag of hardware :)

So for the hole diameter, I have not a clue, but I will say that it was pretty close to the actual O.D. of the short tube that pushed through, I essentially applied the template, used a razor blade to transfer all the markings into the paint and then startted cutting. I used my dremel w/ a cut off wheel and made 3 light passes unitl i was through, and then took a 1/2 round file to clean up, and just kept touching it up until the tube would pass through snugly from the outside, then I placed the piece in from the inside of the fender after a little paint.

Since I didn't have any instructions, I thought the provided tube with the kit would replace the inner guard tube. However when i fit it all up, the provided tube was long enough to span the gap between the air-box and the snorkel, but not long enough to get hose clamps on both ends, so that is when I decided to modify the inner guard tube to allow me to cut down the provided softer tube and hose clamp it to the inner guard tube, which I like better, since the inner guard tube is bolted up and much sturdier than the provided tube.

I also added a thick amount of black rtv to all joints not hose clamped, so between the inner and outer air box, and between the outer air box and the inner guard tube and then between the inner and outer snorkel pieces.

Thanks Bill - I like the RTV idea too. Now I am just mystified as to why the rubber hose/tube is so long if it is only intended to bridge between the inner snorkel box and the OEM 'inner guard tube'??? Oh well. The way you did it makes sense and I guess I won' stress it - enough stress taking a dremel to a fender as it is!

Now I just need to decide whether I am going to just follow the template, or be more drastic. Meaning, I am debating cutting off the round tube on the outer snorkel in order to position it exactly *before* I cut the fender, then figuring a way to join the outer to the inner. That way I can position it exactly the right height, angle, fwd/back, etc. With only 2 data points from you two, and two different results, that isn't enough for me to feel warm and fuzzy right now. I'll noodle on it for a few days, got a run of drawers to build first anyhow ;)

I think Mudd's issue was his template, it got torn and didn't really line up right. I trusted the template and it all worked out perfectly.

Battling the hose/inner tube issue, looking for a replacement 3.5" or 90mm hose and not finding anything affordable. Might have to hack like @BillZ260 which i am not thrilled with.

Also, did you guys have a bad bracket?

Honestly looking for an authentic TJM but wow those are hard to find in USA.
