Is it possible to upgrade a US LC or LX to have the round air box?

Yes, but the parts are difficult to come by. There is a thread floating around where someone sourced one and installed it.

Re: carwash, it holds up fine. When installed properly, it feels very solid.

UPDATE:

I drove the truck for about an hour today in a light to moderate drizzle. Afterwards, I took a look inside the air box and here is what I found:

Nothing to worry about given the circumstances but it goes to show that even in light precipitation, water does make it's way inside. I am not overly concerned but it does make me wonder about what would happen if I were driving for hours on end in a downpour.

Is the system water tight? In other words, would you trust it to driving through high water?

I would drive it through high water after sealing up the valve in the top right of the last photo I posted. But then there wouldn't be anywhere for water entering through the snorkel to drain. Hence, my overly drawn-out discussion on whether to drill a drain hole on the bottom outside edge of the snorkel.

With the heavy rain and offroading this morning in charleston, I was very surprised how little water the safari brand lets in, hardly any moisture in box except by valve at bottom.

Good info Paul..... did that water look like it just entered the airbox and ran down the inside of the box and puddled there? No water made it up to your filter, correct? Looking at the two designs, it seems to me that the Safari with it's turned down head might mitigate water entry better. How many of you guys have actually pulled your filter like Pfran to take a look for water? Particularly after driving in a hard rain at highway speeds?

I would be more worried about some of that dirt getting into my engine than the water.

You might want to take a shop vac to it.

water entered through the tube that passes through the fender...(AKA, the snorkel)

as much rain as came through georgia and sc this weekend...if that is all you have then it is nothing to worry about...nothing at all.

cant wait to install mine....

I would have been ecstatic if it looked like that after being in the rain for 3-4 days. The problem is that it went from the garage > 1 hr drive in light to moderate drizzle > back to garage. I am confident that if I took it on a 2+ hour trip in a heavy downpour, the air box would look much worse.

You're right...I'll clean it out tonight.

Per Michael: The antenna and motor need to be removed to install the TJM Airtec snorkel. However, per Michael's experience with installing the same snorkel on his LX470, he discovered a second antenna in the PS rear wing window (I've noticed it but never paid much attention to why it was there).
I always thought it was part of defroster to help you see through that window on frosty mornings...mine doesnt work but if it is an antenna wire instead that explains it. Funny this is very first time I have ever read or heard this....anyone else found this to be true or is Spressoman unique in his find?
It appears the purpose of this antenna may not be for FM.

From the FAQ:

"The LX has built-in cell phone (Optional & '96 technology)
The LX Left Rear sliding window is fixed and does not slide open. (All LX's with or without optional cell phone)
(This slider had cell phone antenna on it)"

Those are points describing the 1996 LX450, not a 100 Series (which came to be in 1998).

Oops! Hence the posting in the 100-Series Cruiser tech section!

Still I wonder if the same situation holds true. It wouldn't make much sense to have two FM antennas on a vehicle.
Also the fact that some have reported the poor performance of the glass antenna would imply it is designed for a different frequency range.

It is an additional FM antenna. It is referenced multiple times throughout the FSM and owner's manual. I always thought it was for a different band.

Interesting, at first pass I would have thought the window antenna would be an AM antenna (loop type and all...)

that is okay, I thought it was a defrost grid to clear that window faster for merging into traffic and such on icy cold or foggy mornings. :) Wondered why it never got clear....LOL

I thought this as well no wonder it hasn't been killing these cold Montana mornings.

TJM snorkel carwash test results: no problem.
My truck has been through two of the brush/slappy carwashes in DC, one that pulled the cap of my Defender's snorkel, and did just fine. In case anyone else was worried about the brushes damaging your TJM...
