It looks like it's been a while since a tire discussion in the club forum. Since I killed a tire this weekend, I'm in the market for new ones. Debating keeping my 16" wheels or look for some LC or Tundra 18" wheels. Then what tire? BFG AT, Falken Wildpeak, Cooper, others? Pappy's cut sidewall in the Falken was disappointing, but considering my gashed tread, maybe the rock and snow made for just right slicing. Opinions?

I hit that rock pretty hard. I would be surprised if any tire could have survived that impact. My only comment is the Falken seem to have a stiff sidewall, and they don't ride as nice as my KO2's.

I’ve always been a fan of the KO/KO2 as well as the KMs.
That said I’m currently running DuraTracs on the 4R and the FJ40 and really like them. They are great in the snow and rocks. The first year I had them on the 40, I ran a Jemez snow run in 2WD with locker the entire day. Wasn’t deep snow but I was still impressed.

Mauser, did you have any fit issues with Larry's 200-series wheels? From what I can find, the center caps won't fit up front without spacers. Are you running spacers on yours?

I have been very pleased with the Toyo Open Country MT on my 80. I am thinking of trying out the Nitto Ridge Grappler on the twendy.

I like the Cooper ST Maxx on my GX470

Yes, you need spacers. I run 1.25" spacers with both the 18" LC wheels (285/75 r18) and the stock 16s with 285/75 r16. I need spacers for the 16s because there isn't enough room between the tire and control arm for snow chains.

I am on my second set of Wildpeaks on my LX. We currently have them on the LX, my wife's GX, and daughter's 4Runner. I really like them in the snow. It looks like they have gone up in price about 40 bucks a tire since I bought my last set.

Good to know about the chain clearance!
Wildpeak A/T 3W?

Did you get 5 wheels from Larry or 4? I like those wheels, but may have to buy 8 to get 5.

I got all 5. I really like the way they look and get a lot of compliments.

I'll be ordering my second set of Wildpeak AT3s for the 4runner as I love them. The bang for the buck factor works for me.

Incidentally @2manycruisers, I have three Cooper Discoverer AT3 LT285 75 16, load E that I'd like to get rid of as they're too much tire for a 2500# trailer!! They have a lot of life left since they're hardly supporting any weight and I'd guess they were installed back in 2013 when the trailer was made. Not sure if this helps with anything but just throwing it out there!

I currently do not run spacers, but I bought them, and have them for front and back I think (never installed). I'm running 35x11.5's , and there is rub on full turn/compression. I have never used snow chains in the front, and always been fine just running them on the rear.

I'm still running the stock 16" wheels on my '99 LC, with 285/75-16 KO2s. No lift and no regear. Towing over mountain passes is a struggle. But I'm driving a 21-year old, 3-ton land yacht with a kind of small V8 with pretty low HP rating.

I like the extra sidewall and the 16" tires are a little less expensive. Current set is load range E which makes me feel good about durability and ability to tow/haul some heavy stuff.

I have decided to give the Falken Wildpeak AT/3Ws a try.
