Tires for my New to me 80

My new to me LX450 is in need of new tires to the point they won't pass inspection, I am thinking of going with 305/70 16 , from what i have read it's about the biggest tire i can fit without lift, 70% of my four wheeling is in the sand so the wider footprint will help, I can get 5 and dual snorkels for a grand shipped....seems to me this is the way to go as I want to upgrade suspension but it's not the right time....
hows the driveability with 305's and stock gears? right now its on 255's...any thoughts or input appreciated as i want to get something this weekend while it's on sale....

You'll experience a mild loss of acceleration and the wider track and increased weight will exaggerate any current issues you might have in your aging steering and drivetrain. 285/75 and 295/75 are also possible with similar side effects.
