I just came across this rig and it has no lift and is on 225/75/r16 currently. Found a set of 285/75/16 and am not sure if those are too big without a lift or no? I am in Japan and no one speaks english, so thought I would give you guys a try. Thanks in advance.

It depends on how much the original suspension has sagged and that will depend on how its been used and how old it is. Im guessing the new tyres will be about 70-80mm bigger in diameter and 40-50mm wider.
It will also depend on what offset your rims have.
They maybe ok on the road but offroad they could rub. Too many unknowns for a definitive answer.

Post up a pic of the suspension and tyre in the wheel arch.

Photos, I am not wanting to go wider, currently 9". Was looking at 235/85 or 255/85.

Also, it is a 91 PZ70

That suspension looks like its sagging a bit and could affect the ride comfort and handling. The 235/85/16 are the best IMO. My old 75 series with 235's

Thanks for the reply and the validation on tire choice,

Yes suspension is currently in the works on upgrading, just tough trying to do it in english in a japanese society. Couple guys with awesome rigs but the language barrrier is slowly being broken.

Nice rig! Looks like the parts of Australia I have been in. Used to live in Adelaide. Miss seeing all the utes.

You would be able to fit 235/85r16's pretty easily. I’m running them with a lift and they are too small imo. I’m sure I’ll feel the power drop going to 255s

That is my fear too. That they may look small once a lift goes on. Have you looked at ratio change with putting 255s on?

Nice soft top btw.

If you are thinking of lifting, I would go with 255's. Now it will slow you down and zap some power, but I can at least turn my boost up a little to compensate :D

Here is a closer picture. You can see I have plenty of room, and it looks small. Measures right at 31" now.

These are general measurements, different tires have different heights/widths.

235/75R16 = 29" x 8.8
235/85R16 = 31.7" x 9
255/85R16 = 33" x 10"

That looks good, I take it then you are still on stock suspension?

Being in Japan, skinnier tires are more popular on all the rigs, and are easier to come by. But that is not saying much since most vehicles are small. 255/85 is probably the biggest I would go comfortably in the SWB. I want the little wider tires due to sand driving, but overall think I will get by with either. Thanks again for the info.

I have Probabaly a 2.5” or more lift on mine. I’ve always run 35s and bigger on my cruisers but I think 255s with a short or medium wheelbase is just right.
