Hey Guys,

I am in the market for some new rubber on my 1981 BJ42 Cruiser... I really like the BFG's Mud Terrains, however becuase my cruiser is my 3rd vehicle and not a daily driver, I really can't justify throwing $750 for new rubber....

Anybody know of a cheaper knock off of the BFG's MT's tread... I heard that Walmart's brand had them but haven't had any luck up here in canada finding them... I know you get what you pay for... and although a brand new set of BFG's would be my number 1 way to go, just can't hit the pocket book that much..

Oh, I am looking for 31 x 10.5 R15's.... I have been tossing and turning over going with 10.5 wide or 9.5 wide, you guys got any opinons on which is better (both functionally on the trail and what looks cooler)... Also, I am pretty sure that 10.5's will fit on stock rims but wanted to confirm????

Any opinion is welcome...

I've got some Dayton's on the rear of my dually. Happy so far, but they're not much like M/Ts

$113 each in 31x10.5 with a quick search. You might find them cheaper somewhere.

I only paid about $120 each for swamper TSL radials in 31x9.5. They're a bit taller, much narrower, and probably a bit less road worthy, but not bad. I got them from 4 Wheel Parts.

I had a really great experience with 4 Wheel Parts. Check with them when you find something. If they carry it, they'll beat the price.

My Dad is running the Toyo Muds. He's really happy with those and they are pretty impressive on the trail. Not super cheap but you might find a deal if you shop around.

Good luck.

Hi All:

Look on "Craigslist" - you can probably find a decent of used treads at a good price.

Re-treads are another idea.

Good luck!

Pep Boys has a BFG AT knock off, it's called the Definity Dakota AT. If you can find a store that still has a set of Futura Dakota AT, it's the same tire they just changed the name from Futura to Dakota and they should be on clearance. If you can find a store that's desperate to get rid of them, you might be able to get them for around $50 a tire. They do come in a 31x10.50 15. Pep Boys tires are made by Cooper and they carry a 50,000 mile warranty. Not a bad deal and right now they have buy 3 get one free.

I'm on my second set of Bridgestone Dueler AT 31x10.5"s. No complaints.

As for the stock rims, I still have them but am not running them, having gone to a slightly wider American Racing steel wheel when I switched. This was done based on Bridgestone's recommended rim width.

I've since learned that TLC is putting 31x10.5 BFG's on stock rims for their restorations - apparently with no ill effects. Been thinking about starting a thread of inquiry about this - hopefully it's answered here.

As to 9.5 vs. 10.5. . .There is a school of thought stating that slightly narrower is better when it comes to getting through the loose topsoil of snow and down to where there's a useful surface to grab. Remember that the Land Cruiser legend was born on tires narrower than what you are suggesting, and I doubt anybody here will accuse Toyota's engineers of being idiots. Maybe it's not the best thing for gonzo rock-crawling or mud-bogging, but on a working truck it may make good sense.
