Tire/Wheel Sizing Sidewall Question

Hey All! New here to the forum and a new owner of a kzj78. Forgive me for my naive question but I tried searching through the forum and couldn’t find any specific post that could help.

I’m in the process of trying to purchase a set of new tires and wheels but want to get a certain look where you get the sidewall “bulge”.

my question is, how is that achieved. I know in some pics it’s deceiving because the tires are aired down. But I do like that look and want the wheel to have some protection as well.

How is this achieved? Is it buying a narrower wheel and getting a wider tire width? Would this be kind of the opposite of tire stretching you see on some import cars?

I’m looking at either 7.5 or 8”’wide and 16” Dia. wheel. What width tire would you suspect would get me in this ballpark given those specs?

I currently have a 2” Ironman lift on it. Really want to just fill the arches and give it a nice aggressive look.

Thank you FJBen! Would that give you that sidewall bulge going with that side of an tire on a 7.5” wide wheel? I’m gonna check if I can clear with that width. I think wheel offset is 0 but looking around online looks like on kzj78 stock wheels are offset -20. That’s my one worry might need to either get spacers or find a different wheel.

A side wall bulge? Is it the same as wearing half a tennis ball in your underwear lol? Tyres are meant to fit right to get maximum mileage and grip and to stay on the rim if you hit something.

Yeah I guess what I’m saying is I’ve seen some tires where it looks super squared off on the wheel. The sidewall looks super straight and no wheel protection. How do you avoid that? It’s pretty hard to explain I guess.

Every tire will give you rim width suggestion, for example my 255/85 suggest a 6.5" to 8" rim.

whatever tire you get if you run the narrow suggestion you'll be golden, if your really looking for the blue oyster approved bulge, go even narrower, pretty simple.

305/70R16 is a 33x12 tire and will probably get you the look you want. It is slightly out of manufacturers range for 7.5" rim and some big box shops will even decline to install it but it'll be fine. Go with the small local shops. I've run 35x13 on 8" rim and the tire wear was fine and even across.

Thanks for the tip hoser! I will definitely try to get the widest tire that won’t rub. Having dealt with the big box shops, I agree. Haven’t crossed my mind but I will go to a smaller local shop this go around.
