Im looking to put an extra factory carrier on passenger side of my 79 40. I don't know if I should stay with the tube style or go with the older "flat" style.

You care to give any in put as to which one will work the best??

IMO, it depends what you want it for. A second spare? If so, what size?

There are ways to improve all of the carriers. I happily share ideas with customers.

Keeping original tube carrier for spare.

Wanted to carry cooler/gas cans on a modified original carrier.

Was thinking the older passenger carrier would work but I don't know if will interfere with amby door. Not sure how they latch.

You know, that is a very good question, and one I honestly never thought about, ever. The older carriers untilize a latch hook that takes up all the vertical real estate on the rear sill. Since the ambi door sills are 'notched' for the ambi doors to sit flush, you'd have to set the hook low enough to clear the door. Then I'm not sure there'd be enough real estate left on the sill for the lower bolt holes to attach to sheet metal.

I'd be hella curious to hold an older latch hook up to an ambi door sill. But I don't have that option right now.

Nonetheless, a very good question. I like it when people make me think.
