So I'm chasing down a nasty sounding rattle that kicks in between 1600 and 1800, only under load, worst up hills etc. Happens more when the engine is hot, less when it's raining. Sounds tinny, like a loose exhaust flange but I checked them. It started not long after I replaced my clutch. It doesn't really vibrate the car much but it sounds terrible and is a bit worrying.
Any thoughts or ideas?
I have a bad habit of assuming the worst and taking on jobs I don't need to do, but i've been thinking it might be my pressure plate working loose.

Not too sure about HJ's but early Tacoma's had a similar problem with the exhaust heat shields, they would warm up and start to rattle. When they were cool they would make far less noise so it was harder to find when inspecting. Might be worth a shot checking all the heat shielding (if there is any).

That would be my first thought, too, especially since it is worse under load when the engine is tilted over a bit in the engine bay.

Thanks guys, good thought. It does sound a lot like a heat shield, but I actually don't have any heat shields, it's an aftermarket exhaust system with different extractors. I have looked for places that the whole exhaust might be shaking and touching something, haven't found any yet but that doesn't mean it's not the case.
I think the exhaust system was brand new when I got the car, I used to hear it expanding as it warmed up. I'll try checking all the flange bolts when it's hot.

Maybe this is the ticking noise that some of the 1HZ motors have? I have one that ticks around 1500-1800.....goes away until 2100-2400-ish rpms. It's definitely not anything to do with a heat shield. It's lower in the motor. Some days it's super annoying, other days you can't hear it. I've read a ton about it....pretty sure it was attributed to crank flex....Toyota seemed to not be worried about it and guys that have experienced it have said it has never gone away and never changed and they've covered huge amounts of miles. Weird.

Well I took the car to a mechanic and got him to drive it; there were a few noises I wasn't sure about. I was thinking injectors, valves and a demonic gremlin with a hand-saw, but he reckoned they all were from the valves needing adjusting. Booked in for this Tuesday, so we'll see. Honestly, I reckon there's a green haired gremlin with a s*** sense of humour in there, but maybe I'm wrong....

What kind of truck/engine? Literally just did the valves yesterday and was a 1hr job total on a 3B taking my time and triple checking shim drag. No dropping oil, etc. Happy with the results and one less ticking noise...

HZJ75 with a 1hz. I would love to do it myself, both for the personal growth and because I am a broke-ass who doesn't want to pay a mechanic. I don't have feeler gauges or a valve compressor, or a garage, or even a bit of flat hard ground to park on, but I've pulled off a few miracles in the past, so maybe I should do this myself too.

Legit! Those engines are more complicated and lacking space is limiting - no shame intended of course. I stretched a lot with A/C repair on my previous 100 series and was happy to get into the engine a bit more on the 3B. Good luck!

Hi Mate, did you ever get to the bottom of this? I have the same issue following a clutch replacement... Cheers
