I'm looking for a sure fire way to make sure the mechanical timing is set correctly on a 95 runner. I replaced the head gasket on one side and have put it back together. I am almost positve the timing is wrong on one or both cams. By wrong I mean 180 degrees out. it turn over but doesn't run which makes me think the timing is off. I have turned both cams 180 and set them up again but no luck. I now think one cam is right and one is wrong??? If that makes sense. Please help, I need to figure this thing out and I am only going to take the front end of the motor apart one more time before it gets towed.

Just take a breather and start again, don't assume anything is anywhere, just redo it.

Use a feeler peice of wire in the #1 spark plug hole to feel the piston coming up while you turn the engine over by hand. Rock the engine back and forth till you get it just right at the top. Then reset the cams (I know it's a pain with the marks so far away from the cam gears....) and tirn it over by had a few times till the marks come back. (I think they will come back..... maybe not though) but turn it over and make sure the marks on the cams come back to where they are suposed to.

I had the same problem with my ex 90 4Runner replaced the timing belt and it wouldn't fire....... I had it 180 out...

Too bad you're in WA I'd tow it off for you :D

Update, the timing belt and marks are fine. They are where they are supposed to be. So I focused on the spark. Did the distributor dance back and forth 180 degrees and nothing. SOOOO, I hook up a plug, ground it to the engine, and turn it over, no spark??? Could the coil just go bad all the sudden, or what. I tried to follow the FSM for a 93' on troubleshooting the ignition, but I'm loosing this battle. Thanks in advance
