Pulled the timing cover today and noticed the small plastic bit that fits in the grooves was half missing and flaking. Is there any fix or do I need to replace the whole cover?

If it doesn't go through you're fine. The chain guides are there to prevent that.
Look into steel guides when you go back together

Those grooves are definitely not supposed to be there.... get a new cover. They are cheap. x2 on metal guides. Go with LCE
