Timing Cover Gasket

here's a pic of the short hose coming off the waterpump to the oil cooling line. pic not so good, but i'm sure you've all seen similar. thought it would be smart to fix this while i'm in there. very difficult to see from above, best while under the truck.

also, you might find the fan shroud is NOT your friend. i got so sick of that damn thing bumping into every tool i used while down there. i just cut the fawker in 1/2 & removed. much better now! i've got an idea for putting it back together. maybe a hasp or something to keep its shape once installed.

That short pipe actually bolts to the back of the timing cover plate, not the front. And yes the short hose is a bear to get in place. Use some light wd40 or similar lubricant to help it slide on easier.

ah, that makes more sense now. i thought the alignment of both pipes was screwy. thanks.

well, i'll go ahead and post these last pics but sounds like Dave-T fixed my problem. i checked the FSM and didn't see much about that short rubber hose. is that a factory thing or is there a better way?

Yep, it's factory. But there no one should tell you that you can't just scrap the metal pipe and run the hose from the water pump to the oil cooler.

BTW your cam gear is not stock.

Toyota offers a one piece rubber hose replacement to eliminate the pipe......

I would just buy the hose bulk at an auto parts store. Napa sells high quality gates brand hose.

is that a good thing or bad thing?

my dad told me to install the crank pulley and balancer before i torque down the cover bolts to help center the seal and shaft.

The solid cam gear is actually better then the stock one, although it's not as quiet.

I believe in the fsm it says to put the pulley on (another use for your 46mm socket) before tightening the cover bolts. That way the seal will fit perfectly around the pulley.

I am beginning to wonder if there are two configurations of water pumps in regard to how that little pipe comes out for the oil cooler line. That thing is ridiculous. Going with all rubber sounds like a good idea, particularly if you put a shield hose over it.
I cut my fan shroud horizontal but it may actually be more convenient the way you did it. I bet that you can pull the driver's side with no trouble at all. I just taped over the raw edges with two layers of electrical tape; the edges lined up well.
Did you check the depth of the timing gear oiler? Too deep=oil leak.

Nothing will fit as good or last as long as the OE hoses... its nothing to see a 25 to 30 year old cruiser that still retains 95% of its original hoses....FYI part#15779-61010 is the hose to eliminate the pipe...#90910-05155 is the short stubby hose from the pump to the pipe, commonly known as the "Hose From Hell".....

.

i've always wondered why my 60 2F sounded a little "whiney", that would explain it i guess.

i added some hasps and had the shroud powdercoated. i'll post pics tomorrow. thanks for the advice. i got so sick of that damn thing in my way.

i went ahead and put the "hose from hell" back on the way it was. oh well, i'll upgrade next time.

Up and running tonight guys. That's no easy task torquing those bolts down with the balancer in the way:mad:. But i'm sure better alignment for the seal, makes sense! Thanks for all the help on this one. Took me 4 nights of about 2+ hrs a night. I'll keep an eye on the cover gasket area for leaks. going to bed!

x2 on powder coating or at least some paint!

ordered the gasket and cover seal from CDan. bought it a while back so can't remember exact price but i'd say around $50 for both.

this oil cooler line tube has two metal brackets that seem to line up with the holes around the timing cover. of course, the bolts were not going thru the brackets. i guess the PO didn't feel like doing it?

i lined up bolts "E" but the angle that the tube aligns with the waterpump outlet is too sharp of an angle IMO. does this look correct?

FSM with pictures? take a shot of the first page...

Yes, yes.... Holy Thread revival....

Why are you taking this stuff apart? Is it an oil leak? If so, watch out that the brass oil thingy is not screwed in the timing plate too far so that the thin paper gasket will not seal.
Which paper gasket are you referring to?
