Great idea. I'll let him know. At least it will pinpoint the problem area. Is it safe to say if the timing chain cover gasket needs changing the cam tower seals will be next to fail?

not necessarily, the cam carriers are sealed with fipg. eventually they may leak, fipg dosnt last for ever, but if hes doing the timing cover ad their not leaking i wouldnt worry about it.

I don't really buy the booboo during assembly deal. There must be a reason for two assembly plants on opposite sides of the globe having the same mistake. Could be a training deficiency or a lack in tech data for the assembly guys or poor quality of sealant. I don't think it's as simple as one dude screwed up.

if multiple people are receiving the same training in assembling the engines then it would be probably that their doing it wrong only because their following the instructions that they were told. the issue would be more the assembly instructions and not so much human error.

My 2013 cam tower began to leak a significant amount of oil at 68,000mi. I immediately took it to the dealer, I'm no wrench and since it was under an extended warranty I felt it was their obligation to fix this factory defect. My bill came up to around $2700.
We need to hear more about this - how come this is not covered by extended warranty?

The extended warranty did cover it. I normally don't buy extended warranties but I'm sure glad I did this time. No issues whatsoever since. Now at 98,000mi

I am having the water pump replaced today and a few other parts. The mechanic called and advised my timing chain gasket is leaking. So from reading this thread, as long as the leak is in a low pressure location and not leaking much, i can keep an eye on it until it is worse?

I plan on traveling with the vehicle. Just want to make sure this will not leave me stranded ...

I'd love to see the pics of the leaks as well. From my dumb brain inspection on my vehicle it looks like the time chain leak discussed at the beginning. The toyota dealership that looked it over thought said it was a cam tower leak - but they also wanted 1700 for brakes and rotors so I ran and don't know if I can believe them haha.

First pick is a general area for reference. Second is the best pic i could take based on the location of the leak.

Clean it up and let it ride. A whole lot of stuff has to come off to fix that leak. It will be a very expensive job for a leak that will never end up being very bad.

Mine has been similar for over 80k miles and as long as I clean it every oil change it never hits the ground.

My 2013's timing cover looks nearly the same, maybe a smidge more oily residue collecting on the AC compressor. Hasn't noticeably progressed any worse over a couple years. First discovered it around 95k and now at 120k. @bloc good to hear after 80k things are still holding. I really don't want to tear down the whole front end.

Mine is definitely worse, and to be honest has progressed over that 80k, but as I said it still doesn’t hit the ground. It does bother me a bit that it’s there but even with being able to do the work in my driveway, it is such a huge job it’s not with messing with for a minor leak.
