Had my timing belt, water pump and thermostat replaced last week and noticed a subtle misfiring on cold start which stopped after driving a few blocks and warming up. I planned to get that checked after this weekend. Fast forward to today and the CEL came on along with the VSC Trac and VSC Off lights. My amateur diagnosis is that the t-belt was installed incorrectly and is off by a tooth or two resulting in a misfire. I've parked it and am having it towed in Monday but would welcome any thoughts on the root of the problem or any possible damage that might have occurred. Thank you.

Get a scan tool and provide the codes. Check your cam position wiring.

Year?
DTC (code)?
Could be as simple, as a vacuum line off.

Thanks. That would be nice!. Year is 2002 LX470. Given the progression from minor misfire to major rumble I am not confident it is as easy as that (but will check). Wish I knew the DTC - have never had a CEL warning and don't have a scanner. Have ordered one as this is basics.

I had one come in, where I found cam sprocket spun, shearing knock pin off cam. It was after a cam seal replacement during T-belt service. It ran worst, with each start. As cam spun more out of time, with each start.

So it turns out the issue was a failing coil/plug in #5 cylinder causing the misfire, not the timing belt installation. Have replaced all coils/plugs and got it tuned. Just unfortunate that this went a few days after timing belt job. Anyway, between timing belt, water pump, thermostat, repaired aircon, replaced right lower ball joint and this I am in a good place for maintenance that I probably should have addressed sooner than I did. Now I'm all set for mountain biking/camping/fishing road trips this summer...
