Sorry if this question is too simple for you guys, but I'm just curious.

Should the clutch throwout bearing be touching the clutch and spinning all the time? Or should it only spin when you press the clutch in? :hhmm:

Just for the record:
4/85-earlier = release bearing does not spin constantly.
4/85-newer = release bearing rides on spinning clutch constantly.

Wow! You learn something new on Mud all the time! So on 4/85 and later (like mine) the TO bearing is always spinning. I did not know that.

Jim, if you would, what is the proper way to adjust the arm play? Just zero play? Or some amount of preload pressure? After my Isuzu diesel swap, I have a rattle type noise that goes away with the clutch in...Now this might be the cause.

Try just lightly pressing the clutch when the noise is happening. If it disappears, then that's probably your throwout bearing occasionally hitting the clutch plate and rattling.

4/85-later, there is no adjustment at the arm. A spring keeps the arm & bearing constantly touching the clutch.

earlier trucks, follow the FSM for adjuting freeplay at the slave. There is a return spring to pull the arm & bearing off the clutch, the spring is often gone missing, allowing the clutch bits to rattle around.

Here is my clutch set up with a Downey Bellhousing, H55, stock slave and Downey mount bracket. The spring is pulling the arm towards the slave cylinder, so pulling the TO bearing off the clutch fingers? Is this right? This is how my stock 2F/60 (9/85 year) was set up prior to my diesel swap.

Thanks,

The pictured slave, arm, return spring are the adjustable 4/85-earlier parts. It should be adjusted so when the spring pulls the arm all the way in, bottoming out the slave cylinder, there is clearance between the release bearing and clutch fingers.

Jim,

Thanks for clearing this up for me. At least I had it adjusted correctly.

With 9/85 build date, I wonder if she had an engine swap long ago? I never checked the engine numbers before the diesel swap and the engine was sold. I've had my 60 for many years and all I changed in the clutch/trans area was a H55. One of life's mysteries...
