Over the last 4 months I have lost quite a few fan belts .

It seems the aircon belts climbs off the pulley and then ends up in the alternator belt and the P/S belt causing them to be thrown off as well .

It once happened in the middle of the Namib desert as I was revving high to get up a big dune . The belts are then shredded and needs new ones fitted . It seems it is more likely to happen above 4000 rpm

It never happened to my 3F but I see the 3F has a tensioner pulley keeping the belt tightly in the groove .

Is it a common problem ? Any fixes ?

Use factory Toyota belts and keep that poor 2F well under 4K RPM.

Double-check the pulley rotation for the AC as it may be off kilter slightly which with the non-OEM belt and the slight wobble of the pulley being off kilter is enough to throw the belt at higher rpm.

I would suspect that either the bearings in the A/C pulley are worn/loose, or you have a bad/loose/cracked bracket on lthe a/c compressor.

Is the AC idler still there?

Have ordered OEM belt - it needs to come from Japan .
The pulley align fairly well but a very slight wobble in the big pulley on engine side ( hardly visible ) .

Spike , do you mean this :

I had a 3F and fitted a 2F last year . It never had an idler pulley . So that may be the problem

Hi, Id pull tension bearings and check them. THis has never happpened to me with toyota belts. Mike

Yes, the 88595 pulley and bracket. Keeps the long part of the AC belt from flopping around. I can take a pic of mine, if you need it.

sometimes if your pulleys arent lined up right and you get your belt to tight they will fall off maybe try and not tighten them so much?

Thanks
My problem is partly the fact that the engine is a mixture of 2F and 3F parts .
I had to make a bracket so that the 3F powersteering pump ( just above the AC pump) and the 2F aircon pump would work .
A picture would be great Spike . I can then maufacture an bracket to make the idler pulley fit on top of the belt .

I found thid thread after my 2F AC belt came off a few times. The cause was a seized idler pulley (88595 part), rubbing very gently on the belt but enough to heat it up and get it to jump off. Adding this in case anybody else comes here looking as I did. Thanks all - I did not even know there was an idler there, you have to look around to find it as it is not very visible from above. I was able to get the AC belt back on without even noticing it, for example.

You can fix that idler pulley by replacing the bearing for under $10. I forget the bearing number, but if you search you'll find it. I *think* it's a 6302 double sealed.

I have mostly Toyota belts but one gates on the airpump. The air pump have very little adjastment as has a 90 on the mount which is so odd for FJ 40.To get the belt on I had to put all one then put top pulley on the water pump as once used screwdrivers but was VERY tough to say the least.I knowtish when changing the water pump was so mush easier so a tip for anyone else.
I have toyota a/c whick works but will leak out after a few weeks.Any way to check it beside taking it in for the dye test?
Does anyone know the numbers for the ac and air pump for toyota belts and is there a good place to order and have them mailed or shipped to Alberta Canada?
I have 2 extra main belts the wider one.
Also want to order the small hoses as my are not bad but it is a 1983 but not hard to touch but want to have spare.
