May 2008 Ruidoso Event - Thrill on the Hill

Here's the basic info for next year's "Thrill on the Hill" event to be held in Ruidoso. It's actually an event for FJ Cruisers, but a bunch of us old school Cruiser guys went last year (first time for the event) and we had a great time. We can discuss at tonight's meeting if anyone would like further details, or just post a note as usual.

Hello everyone,

The planning for this years 2nd Annual Thrill on the Hill has begun. The dates are going to be May 23-26th, 2008. It will be held at the same location in Ruidoso,NM. I am currently working on a new website that will be a lot better than last years. I will send everyone a link when it is up and running. I have started a thread on fjcruiserforums.com and invite everyone to stop by say hi as we kick off another successful rally. I will provide a link below to this thread. I would also like to extend an invitation out to anyone wishing to help participate in the planning of this event to make it even more successful as last years. Please contact me via email or feel free to call me to discuss any ideas or suggestions. I hope everyone is doing well and hope to see each and everyone of you at this years coming event.

Molly and I are both looking forward to this.

But we aren't going to rough it this time. We will give into the luxury....

of the 80! :D

For those who went last year will remember a bunch of fun and a good group of people. This was my baptism into wheeling. I have been hooked since. I am planning on making the runs again this year, it would be great to get a group from HDC. Even though it is touted as a FJC event - there were plenty of other Toyotas in the mix. Hope to see you all there!

So many events, not enough vacation time!

:frown:

Cruise Moab is going to be my May event for this coming year. Won't make Ruidoso.

For those who were at the Thrill on the Hill in Ruidoso last year will remember a great time and some fun wheeling in the mud. Well, the registration site is now up and running. I have signed up and can't wait. Here is the link for anyone interested - it's open to all Toyota 4X4s.

i'm 99% sure I am going to this. I'll be registering by the end of the week. I figure I should be able to go on any trail a stock FJ could.

the trails we were on last year were very moderate. mostly just scenic, on the last day the hardcore guys went out, but we just hung out in camp and tried to keep the beagles dry...

We had a lot of rain and cold weather last year - especially for Memorial Day weekend - but we still had a blast.

As Rory said, most of the trails were moderate and some were easy. Some of the FJ Cruisers had never been off road before. Some were built, but most were stock.

I was one of the "hardcore guys" that went out on the last day. They took us to a desert spot near Tularosa (maybe 1.5 hours from Ruidoso). We had a blast. Mike M. was there in his 80, Steve in the 40, Juane in his 80, and others I'm forgetting. The hardcore group was mostly made up of HDC members, as the trail leaders specified a minimum of 33 inch tires and most of the FJCs weren't there yet.

It was a great event - I would highly recommend it.

The drive from Ruidoso to the Three Amigos trail outside of Tularosa was very scenic. If it took 1.5 hrs then I didn't notice because we went through some beautiful areas, through Ruidoso, past the Casino, and back down the West side (?) of the mountain. John and his Dad are from the area so they were our tour guide over the CB.

We had a very good HDC turn out last year. The web site says the FJC Trail Team will be at the event again this year. Connie said she is looking forward to it!

I agree - especially for those who haven't been out much yet. The trail team is a great bunch of coaches.

Too many other events planned for me in May. I won't make it this year. I will say to anyone new who's contemplating it that it was a blast. I stayed on the stock trails and still got left in the dust by the stock FJ Cruisers with much nicer suspensions than mine when we spent a couple miles traversing very rocky roads.

Then again, maybe Danise's aunt would let us use her condo in Ruidoso, making it a much easier trip to plan for if we don't need to worry about camping.

Took me awhile to find the linky. I hate the way they display in the club section.

Thrill On The Hill

This is better. I just might go!

Two threads ... same event. I'm merging them and making them sticky.

Jennie and I had a great time last year, like everybody else, but its looking like we're going to hook up with a few of her Denver cousins in the wilds of southern Utah, San Rafael Swell area, or Dixie Nat'l Forest. :hhmm: guess we might have to wheel in Utah :bang: !!

Back a month or so when I tho't we'd be doing the thrill again, I suggested somewhere in here that we consider camping out in the woods as a group. The private RV park that was last years HQ wasn't the greatest... guess its up to you'se guys, or maybe the beagles :grinpimp: .

It's time to revive the "Thrill on the Hill" thread. I was hoping to make it down there this time - had a blast last year - but the calendar won't allow it. We've got a wedding that weekend.

Anyway, I had a nice note from Brandon Burling (the event organizer), and I noticed that he also copied others from HDC who attended last year. He said that he's got lots of FJCs signed up, but not many Land Cruisers. He said that he appreciates the good attendance from High Desert Cruisers, and wants the FJC owners to understand the Land Cruiser heritage. So all other Toyota 4WD owners are welcome.

Last year, we took a bunch of Toyota Trails magazines to hand out to folks who may not have been aware of TLCA. I would like to send a stack of Trails down there with someone from our club that's going down (maybe you, Ron?), and if we've got multiple people going, then you could share the distribution. We all just passed them out on runs and around the campground. It's a good way to meet people and share the word on TLCA.

I will plan on bringing the magazines to the May HDC meeting and we can discuss who's going to the event and who would like to help with this.

Thanks!
Evan

I'll be there, and I have no problem doing this. I'll be going out there on Friday night, getting runs in on Saturday, and will be leaving Sunday morning.

I just read on the FJ cruiser forum that the total registration is around 32 vehicles, and 80+ people. According to the main rally site, camping at the campground is limited to 100 people, so if you want to be @ the main campground, sign up soon.

Also,
There may be restrictions in the Lincoln National forest due to the drought conditions, so they are considering alternate location for the runs.
