Have a three on the tree. It is my belief that first and reverse do not have syncronized gears. This is true right? In order to get into first or reverse I have to push the clutch in and wait for about a second before I can put it in gear to not grind, 2nd and 3rd no issue. Supposed to be like this?

Definitely no syncros on the 1/Rev gear.

Yes, first and reverse have no synchro. You can always double clutch to down shift to first at any reasonable speed.
Down shift double clutch matches the input gear speed with the output shaft speed so the gears won't grind when they slide into engagement.

1. Shift to N and let out the clutch.
2. Rev engine to speed that it will run if it was in first gear.
3. Step on clutch and downshift to first with no grinding.
(you need to be quick between steps 2 and 3 so that the cluster gear doesn't slow down.)

synchros, don't need no stinkin synchros.

yeah man, double clutch or stop and be patient are your only options with a 3spd.

can't wait to try and put the h55f in the 40!

You can also shift into 2nd, then to 1st.
