I’ve been trying to talk to my neighbors as much as possible to get the lay of the land.

DJ, of DJ’s welding (other side of American Legion), is a cool mofo. ChillAF.

He’s from the neighborhood, so nobody fawks with him. He knows everything that goes on in the area.

His son is an MPD officer that patrols our area, so he’s got the good AND not-so-good guys in his pocket. I’m going to see if I can get some of that protection extended to my lot as well.

On the other side is the Motorcycle Machine Co...

(found this on the Internet from back of an old motorcycle magazine)

He’s no longer in business, but still lives there. Turns out he used to work at Lunati Cams back in the day (the brains at my machine shop did as well), which was a huge Memphis performance institution before it was sold to Holley, which squandered the vast talent and knowledge and most of the local resources were lost. Lots of Memphis “Mafia”-ish history there (Platinum Plus anyone? That was the most legal of their enterprises). Comp Cams is a cleaner, more corporate descendant of Lunati.

He actually has a boring machine and crankshaft balancer in his shop, amongst other cool stuff. I’m not sure if I want to use him for work necessarily, but there seems to be a Fawking Mind-Boggling convergence of opportunity in the energy vortex. We’ll see where that trail goes.

I want to go inside his cave to see what all is in there, but also may see things I don’t want to.

I’ll be on the hunt for a cheap forklift if I have any $$$ left in the budget. Holla at me if you need one taken off your hands.
Until I had one, I never knew just how INCREDIBLY handy they are in and around a shop! Both of mine are Nissan 50's. They are cheap and reliable. (and @jrob endorsed!)

Nothing new to report. Thanks to the beautiful weather we’ve had lately, the scapers are off doing real work.

Unfortunately the Coronavirus has been discovered on the property. The soft asphalt is infected with dozens of cases of embedded sores. Maybe hundreds.

@southff4 ‘s monster FJ40 is moving closer to the Rubicon to live with @MountNGoat in sunny California.

I gave it the once over for Steve and took it by the shop to pose on the new gravel...

I’m going to need that mural ASAP!

You need a pic of a similarly built (albeit not nearly as pretty) blue one in that same pose as it waits to be shipped out West.

Yeah we do!

Just got back from a tour of the new shop. Cool set up!! Thanks for looking at the 40.

I’d like to congratulate Fergmaster Fresh on his new promotion (demotion?) to Shop Foreman once he’s cleared to return to active duty

Gloomy weather = shop progress. They got the rest of the office torn out, along with the executive restroom.

We’re going to a species-neutral single restroom setup to maximize floor space. I’ll repurpose that plumbing for a general purpose shop sink.

Roof definitely has a a drip, so I’ll need to chase that down. I also need a more extensive electrical overhaul than I had hoped.

On the plus side, the restroom window is in great shape (relative to the other ones), so I’ll keep it intact.

I think I have these guys talked into doing some more work. Cross your fingers.

Wrap around shower curtain for the restroom and you're set.

Water fountain like in school is a nice touch.....

We last left off needing to tidy up the electrical so things could move forward. The more we picked at it, the more it became apparent that we needed to just rip everything out and start over.

The feeder wires to the panel weren’t big enough for what I need, the panel is a POS, the panel in the carport is all wrong,
and all the wiring in the building is sh!t.

So....

I bit the bullet and am spending my lift/forklift/retirement fund on new electrical. Sucks, but it will be right, it will be clean, and can have something to work with when I add stuff down the road. And it will at least bring something on the property up to code.

The electricians got on it this morning. Out with the old...

They’re putting in the bigger main panel, new bigger panel in the carport, and starting on the wires today. I’m having enough lights to rival the sun delivered in the morning.

Stay tuned...

I bet you will find a good used lift pretty soon in this market.

No doubt, buyers market coming for awhile.

Good call on getting the old trash wiring out.

Got the call around lunch that the electricians were done. I went by to check it out, but got called away for something else as soon as I got there so didn’t take many pics.

I got new big ass service wires run from the weather head and upsized conduit from the meter.

And a new 50 amp panel in the carport. I’ll stick the compressor out there as well as a few other pieces of equipment that don’t necessarily need to be inside.

And, of course, new lights. Originally, I was going to use some strip LEDs from Home Depot. I tried a 4’ section in my home garage and it is super bright and has a nice white color.

They start to add up though when you buy a bunch. And I wanted 8 foot’ers.

My electrician recommended an 8’ ballast-less fluorescent figure with tandem 4’ sections, and LED bulbs. Unlike the Home Depot units, these were a lot more reasonable, and the bulbs were serviceable should I break one or one goes out.

I was not able to see one in action, though. The lighting store had just enacted their curbside pickup & delivery-only coronavirus policy. No one was allowed inside.

First thing I did when I walked in was flip on the lights. And it was... underwhelming :D

It was just merely “bright”. I have so much natural light through all my windows that turning on the lights just made it look normal.

With the 3 continuous rows, it is super evenly lit. I’ll add some more local light on the workbench side, but this is perfect for general use.

I went back this evening with ETAF to light it up like a spaceship.
