Hi there. New to this forum and looking to get into my first 60. Found one locally and hoping those with more expert eyes can tell me what they see here, both condition wise and price wise.

My goals are to find a driver that I can slowly bring back to life. I am not terribly mechanically inclined but I can do some basic work. I realize this one has some concerning panel rust but the seller who is a family friend looked it over carefully with me on the phone and said the frame is in solid condition and there is no rust on the roof/gutters. Also, this one has been in MT all its life. Thanks in advance for the help.

Looks like a very solid deal. @3_puppies is in Helena and most likely has all the parts you’d need to fix that rust. He may know the truck too. Great guy to assist you MT folks.

I don't know that rig personally.
My opinion is it is more a $5-6000 rig looking at the pics, but that is me and it's hard to go with national pricing in a local market.
My guess is it DOES NOT have a 5 speed as stated in the description.
@rkymtnflyfisher is much closer to it than I am.
If you want a 62 series, I'd check out Stephen's in Bozeman:

Thanks for the input all. Seems like the general opinion is a good candidate for a driver and possible restore but may be priced too high? Also thanks for giving me the heads up on areas to explore for rust. I will have the chance to drive it tomorrow and shoot some pictures of those areas and see what you all think.

Is there anything else I need to check out or ask about in my test drive tomorrow? Thanks in advance.

Verify the mileage via Carfax, make sure the VIN on the title matches the plate on the car, run it in 4WD high and low and make sure it all checks out. Get the engine to full operating temp, look for leaks or any strange smells.

The price seems a little high, given it has some body damage. I’d offer $ 6,500 cash (assuming it is original paint) and just see what happens. I bet you’ll end up at $7,500, which is okay. Land Cruiser prices are all over the board these days. There’s something important to be said about it being local to you though. You could easily spend thousands looking for candidates around the country. It’s not an insane price at all.

I’ve owned four 60 Series over the years. That is my two cents.

You'll want to check the knuckles for leakage, trans and transfer case, steering gear box, PS pump
rust areas, "A" pillars, rockers, rear wheel wells, lower tailgate open tailgate and look between the tailgate and body, rear body all along rear bumper area, rear shock mount tube , if it has been a northern truck it will rust from the bottom up, if it came from CA it seems they rust from the top down.
I would make sure a/c and heat both work, also rear heat, can't remember if it is under the pass seat or in console, and stated above 4 wheel drive works, run in 2wd with the hubs locked and make sure there are no vibrations at speed.
you can check to see if the oil galley plug was repaired
ask them where the 5th gear is located? unless they meant 4 forward gears and 1 reverse??

Do a detailed inspection of the frame, especially the rear. Mechanicals are easy to repair, rust is way more difficult and expensive and once rust sets in it never sleeps!

keep looking, good trucks still available. I found a truck last year for a $1000, mechanically shot, but not a drop of rust, made it my camping rig, theyre out there, good luck

Thanks for all the feedback. Got to test drive it on Sunday last week. Panel rust is pretty substantial. The frame looked solid though with surface rust. Pulled up the carpet around the A-pillar floorboard and looked good but the drivers and passengers front doors sowed some rust around the A-pillar area but sills were intact. Lots of body damage though, dents in quite a few places.

Surface rust at the base of the rear hatch window but no rust on the interior of the hatch or at the base of the rear tailgate. I have to imagine that rust is working its way in there though. It was about 30 degrees out and engine turned right over from a cold start. It drove well and no noise in 4H. I did not inspect the knuckles. I thought it was decent but I am still looking. Like many of you have said, expensive for what it is and there are lots of trucks out there.

Thanks again for your opinions.
