So i just recently rebuilt the passenger side rear axle and am getting ready to finish up the driver side. Its been two weeks since the partial rebuild and since then ive put 2000 miles on the truck. A quick 1500 crossing the state on the highways and then last weekend a quick wheeling trip just an hour away.

Last week I began to hear what sounded like a brake shoe or sheild dragging (whrsh, whrsh, whrsh). I crawled under and put eyes and hands on every part. The only suspect i found was a slightly loose caliper halves in the rear. Way less than 1/4 turn on the bolts but buttoned back up and its was quiet as can be so i thought i had it licked.

This past weekend i was leading our club on the advanced run but i took it kinda easy because i puked the water pump in the 22-RE and the 1f in the pig so id like to keep one running toyota around here. Approaching the trail head the dragging reappeared and became an anoyying squeak and got another going over. I chalked it up to a dragging shoe due to the adjustments made to satisfy the safety check before the ride.

On the first obsticle i heard a metallic CLANG and asked everyone to reassure me i just tossed a rock into my spring :D but it was nowhere near as violent as the two FF axles ive heard snap. AND i wheeled the rest of the day without issue, and drove home at 75 sans noises.

Next day going to work i can hear the dragging is worse and noticeable at slow speeds especially. I also noticed when transferring weight side to side (going from leaning driver, to leaning passenger) or crossing a small (4'') grassy swale i will get a CLUNKING noise. The dragging is consistant w/ wheel revolutions but the clunking is not. Sounds like a marble or something spun around in a dryer and dropping as it gets to the top. a sort of C Clunk clunk..... C C C Clunk C CLunk clunk. ( < like that one ? :D )

So its parked away from the house and tools to make it even more fun but im heading out after lunch and was hoping to get some ideas and or wild guesses from folks that might have experienced such.

First things first... ill be disassembling the rebuilt side to check tightness and then looking into driver side for an obvious failure. IN my head i imagine the axle broke and sliding out and thus putting pressure on the brakes; however ive lifted each tire independantly and tried turning the opposite. Would this not identify a cleany sheared axle?

any help much appreciated

Interesting. I'm getting the exact same noise you describe. A dragging noise from the rear with an occasional squeak thrown in and I also get it when swerving the vehicle side to side. I replaced my rear rotors and pads. I also changed all the e-brake components thinking that everything was probably frozen but I'm still getting the noise. My next thought was either one of the caliper pistons is failing or it is something in the axle.

Your c clunk sounds more like broken R&P. Just a thought. But that again if you forogot to lock youtr locknut it could be clunking too plus noise.

Nothing like looking inside to identify the culprit................. THanks for the ideas as I had abandoned the truck away from the house and couldnt just look and see so easily.

I forgot to mention previous maintenance items had been full front and (1/2) rear axle rebuild and all 4 calipers rebuilt in last 60 days.

However the problem was quite obvious after getting the rotor off. Part of the e-brake assembly had come apart and the shoes were not being retained properly. The part that looks like a bent up 16 penny nail that holds the shoe in place by way of the backing plate had come out of its recess. Most the parts had been ground to a fine powder which now coats my ABS sensor and there were a few pieces left hung up in the e-brake mechanism.

SO that identifies the dragging noise and the wheel bearings seemed to be just a hair loose (this is the side i have not rebuilt yet) IM hoping the popping noise is the loose bearings vs. the R&P but its been on my dreaded list of possibilities.

Stomek... if you just replaced your ebrake system i'd pull your rotors and take a look at the shoes to make sure they are in proper functioning order. I had just gone thru all of the ebrake system following Raven's writeup to regain my e-brake; so since i was just in there its more than likely i didnt get the pin/spring combo in just the right groove to keep it in place.

Sounds good. I'll have to adjust the e brake anyways so I will recheck the positioning of everything. Thanks.

Here is what failed. Its hard to see but without this pin/spring combo the shoe does not ride as intended inside the rotor. The apex of the curve pushes out about an inch from the backing plate and wore the inside edge of the shoe.

Calling in the am to see if its a serviceable part or not. I believe its just these three parts and the spring which i never found.

I think I have a similar issue.
I know this is an old thread, but did you ever get this resolved? Were you able to rebuild?

Edit:
Took everything apart and I was having the same issue with the edge of the shoe rubbing.
Luckily, I found the spring and just put it all back together.
Also found the remnant of a brake pad and anti-squeal shim in there. Makes me a little nervous about the POs maintenance habits.
