Alcans are tailored to your exact needs. OME you'll have to play around with to get what you want.

Of course, that's only if you care and actually pay attention and are truthful about how you use the truck.

Have alcans on the rear of my 40 and OME setup on my 60. I like both alot. I think it depends on your goals. If your looking to run 33s and do mostly road and mild wheeling, I think the OME setup is awesome. It's a well designed system, complete with shocks and shackles that work well. Rides well, both on and off-road, and I've driven many hundreds of outback miles (i.e. dirt roads) in the desert of eastern Oregon.

If your intentions are something different than those listed above, go Alcan and design the system your looking for yourself.

well i have a chance to buy both sets used and dont know for sure which one to run, i think ill buy both:D the alcans look like 4" and the OME's look like 2.5 with maybe a 1" greaseable shackle

Buy em both and sell me the set you dont want.

I hope it's okay to glom on to this thread. I'm trying to decide the same thing. What springs to get? OME springs seem to be well recommended here, but I have only a vague understanding of what stiffness I need. I think you can get light, medium or heavy. I do mostly road driving so I like a good smooth ride. The truck is empty most of the time But I want enough strength and stiffness for mild wheeling. I'm thinking OME medium for my needs. Does that seem right to you? What say you?

I also hear good things about BDS and they are less expensive.

If I were to have springs custom made, I'd hardly know how to begin writing the specs for them !! Has anyone here done that? How did it turn out?

Does anyone know; in terms of spring stiffness, if you compare the stock springs on an FJ62 to the OME's, are they closer to a medium or a light?

stock springs are pretty soft by the time they are 15+ yrs old with over 100k, im hoping the alcans or OME's will give a little firmer more controlled ride.

I say go OME. With a 62 you'll want to go heavy IMHO. I did and it provides a very comfortable ride on the road and great performance off. I have additional weight front & back which is always a consideration.

I have OME heavies with OME greasables all around in my 60, not really any extra weight on her yet, and I really like the ride on road, dirt roads and offroad. I just drove from Montana to Moab to Vermont with the back full and a hitch mounted bike rack on the back with 3 bikes. Drode and rode very nicely, I was pleased, especially after my old stockers.

40K miles on Alcans, no dsicernable sag and nice ride (even with a 500lb rear bumper).

Re: the light, medium or heavy argument....Always get heavy. I have made the medium mistake twice on 2 trucks. In the end, you will want heavy or heavier. Seriously, there have been many times I wanted more spring, and exactly zero times I wanted less.

My 40 currently has FJ62 rear springs with an extra long support leaf. Very controlled and not saggy feeling despite the spring over.

I had great luck with custom Alcans, good ride and load carrying capacity. Highly recommended if you have the $$, but not really much more money in the end.

If I were doing my FJ60 again, I would just get the OME heavies, possibly with an extra load leaf in the back. Wagons just attract weight, so you may as well anticipate that and get heavy springs to start with.

In my experience:
OME--consistantly good
Alcans--excellent
Slee Coils-excellent
Skyjackers--crap, don't buy
Ranchos--board like ride

i know they are both good quality but are there any major advantages?

I don't bash vendors lightly, but I'll never own an Alcan product again. Charles did work with me, but two failed sets of springs, 4 chewed up tires, two ruined trips, shocks, shackles, castor correction, vehicle weighing later (read - a lot of time and money wasted), I'm back to my set of OME springs with added leafs. If you drive a heavy 60 series go with OME.

If you have a light 60 series, it's your choice, but I've researched this extensively - Alcan w/weight lose their arch quite quickly (me, set #1-less than 100 miles the shackles were banging on the frame in the front, #2-4" drop w/in 3,000 highway miles - before I even hit the trail and it was completely unsafe-white knuckle driving home after the trail both times). That's my $0.02

Funny Bob-JimB had also a bad experience with ALcan. I felt bad, because my experience was great and I was happy with the product and so recommended them to him. It is strange that things would not be more consistant.

Sacramento Spring will build custom spring packs and they seem like good guys who want to work with you. I would consider them as well. They will also make custom u-bolts for you.

Right now my Fj60 needs more weight carrying ability-I may copy your multi-leaf OME set up. That seemed to be working well for you.

I was going to say the same thing.. I'm not saying I wouldn't run them.. But every set of Alcans I have seen has sagged out early. A few times they made the springs too short and it took 2 or three tries to get right, and they still didn't last.. The whole think about Alcan "building to your exact weight" is sort of hogwash a little too... The way leaves work is they have a load rating.. They factor in base and if you have 200-400 lbs extra than an extra leaf or two per pack... Really not that big a deal...

If it were me and I wanted an approx 2-3" spring, I would do OME in a heartbeat.. Alcan is one of your few options otherwise for bigger lifts, but they are not all their cracked up to be...

"I also hear good things about BDS and they are less expensive"

i have had my BDS/Ironman springs for about a year. i like them alot but they are still stiff riding a year later. they were designed for extra weight so i guess i'll have to get a new rear bumper and drawer system.

i don't know if they are much cheaper now. there was a scream'n deal on ebay way back when i got mine.

Go with the OLD MAN EMU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alcans will sag out......just ask Devo on the board.

I have a set of Alcans for my 55 project & just sitting in the shop the pass side has lost almost 2" in 6 months.:mad::mad:

Good luck.......I run BDS springs on my 60...stiff at first but still have not sagged:D

My next project is lift, have been leaning towards OME Heavy, now it's definate!!
