This sounds like the starter right?

I think I might know the answer here but wanted to make sure before I spent the money.....

History. a few days of nothing on the first key turn, then turn again and crank.... next day no start, jump, started.

To the battery place, (determined charge was draining fast), new battery, fired right up. This morning, a 1-2 second drag (like weak battery), wait, turn again, fired right up.

No clicking, no clunks througout all this....but i still think my starter contacts are going. I am positive the old battery WAS weak and I'm positive the new battery IS good.

Any other possibilities?

thanks

usually a bad starter will give you a click. next time start it with your door open and listen for it

Starter contacts usually either work or they don't. If you're getting a click then the starter's got juice, just not enough to make it go. If the contacts have worn down to where they're not making contact, you won't get anything, no click.

Definitely starter. I had the exact same symptoms as you... I also replaced the battery first and it was good for a couple days, then wouldn't start again. The fresh battery worked on the weak starter contacts for a couple days until they totally failed. Had the starter rebuilt and has worked perfectly since.

I agree with Jason. my was replaced about 1 month ago. I had a rebuilt unit at the same time. I had the exact symptoms, and now cured!

Thanks.....Looks like I'm getting an early Christmas present. Dang it.

How many miles did you get out of it?

word of advice, get a reman starter from NAPA or something similar.

Have you checked the alternator? From my understanding, if the starter contacts are bad, jump starting won't help...

How much do the Napa starters run and are they readily available?

Why wouldn't you just replace the contacts and plunger on the OEM unit?

Why ? For all the work this is to install I would rather stick with OEM parts. The contacts are the issue and only cost $25.

I just had the contacts and plunger replaced to the tune of $275. Don't know how much it would have been to replace the whole thing....but everything works now...

I did the plunger and contacts on mine a few months ago, now I'm getting the same symptoms again. That, and the battery is draining fast. Would anyone think it could be an alternator not recharging my battery very well? I get a click from the solenoid when it doesn't start. Then after several attempts it ends up working. It does it randomly.

Getting a reman starter from a parts store is only like $60. For how much trouble it is to get the starter out, it's worth it to know everything works just right. I tried to do the contacts and it didn't work. I had to undo everything 2x before just getting the whole starter. I think it had a lifetime warranty too.

For all the trouble to take it out, I would just get the OEM Toyota unit and drive on down the road. I've dealt with the "lifetime warranty" on other aftermarket reman parts. After changing them out three times in two years, I finally said, "F That !!".

But you have to do what let's you sleep well at night.

Wonder what change they made in March 2000?

For $300-$350 (starter + solenoid) I can't imagine not just replacing the whole Mary Anne with a new OEM. Way too deep to go in twice. And not worth the hassle of a trail repair to save a few bucks.
