Thinking of trading in my 2017 GX 460 for a 2016+ LX 570 or Landcruiser

Did you regear?
I will be during off season. It’s not necessary unless you rock crawl IMO. Truck drives fine on pavement and moderate off-road use.

The 6 speed struggles on the hard stuff… body lift, 37s, gears and lockers and I'm all set.

I see… any notice of difference during highway driving?
Any MPG change and gear not constantly hunting to seek power?

I drive in 5th with a ect and a pedal commander at all times. Is it ideal at 8k feet above sea level…absolutely not. The truck needs gears.

Everyone has different tolerances for stuff like this so, it’s hard to say. It’s not terrible in my opinion.

I don’t pay attention to gas mileage, so I couldn’t provide real world data on the hit I took in that arena.

I will say I ran 34 inch skinnies on my lc200 with stock gearing and never complained ever. The full fat 35 is a lot of tire for the stock 6speed.

Another question is that my GX 460 has KDSS which is fantastic with handling on and off road. Since the LX 570 doesn’t have KDSS, how does it compensate?

‘Stock for stock with the LX in normal setting in neutral height the Landcruiser is slightly more athletic. It became way more when I upgraded the suspension. But I can hustle the LX pretty well in sport mode. It feels better than the Landcruiser stock.

look the differences are small I feel bad even saying one is better than the other in a certain ways because they’re both so freaking good. If the Landcruiser name didn’t loom so large in our hearts and minds people would be lining up for an LX. I do miss the anonymity the Landcruiser afforded though.

Love the C7 Z06 they’re tremendous cars add an LX and that’s a fantastic garage.

Have you driven/spent any time with an LX? It definitely is a better vehicle overall. I just had a 2022 GX as a loaner and was 100% not impressed for the price.

However, if you're wanting an LX/LC just for the space I'd second guess it a bit. The LX is bigger but not "spacious" for its size in my opinion. If you're going for space you could do better. However, it excels in just about everything else.

The LX is not that much bigger than the GX. There is a fairly large misconception that one is a mid-sized and the other a full-size SUV. There is hardly an increase in cargo capacity and the 2nd row dimensions are almost the same. Just an FYI......

Hi everyone, I’m considering trading up my 2017 Lexus GX 460 Premium for a 2016+ Lexus LX 570.

I love my GX 460 and the off road capability with luxury that it offers, however I need a little more space in my SUV, so I’ve been looking at a 2016+ Toyota Landcruiser, but those SUV’s are north of $90K with decent miles.

As a result, I’ve been looking at a 2016+ Lexus LX 570 which has more luxury features and sells for much less.

I do the occasional off roading but mostly pavement use, so the LX 570 should work well for me and my family.

I’m looking for anything around 30K - 50K miles for anywhere between $60K and $70K, so is that a reasonable price range for what I’m looking for?

Also with the height control system, is it an airbag system or hydraulic?

I also understand that with the height control system, I cannot apply a lift kit, so is it possible to drive around at the highest setting or is the highest setting only available when off roading or while using 4 low?

"so is it possible to drive around at the highest setting or is the highest setting only available when off roading or while using 4 low?"

You can put it in high anytime but when you hit 16MPH or so the truck will automatically lower itself to Normal height.

I was helping someone unload a GX recently and while on paper they may be similar, whatever extra length the LX has in the cargo area pays off a lot in the real world.

It's a hydraulic, or hydraulic over pneumatic accumulators. It's also a more sophisticated variant of the Tenneco Kinetic Suspension cross linking technology that is KDSS, but acts directly on the hydraulic shock bodies.

Yes, a lift kit can be done via adjusting sensors or in Techstream software. It's also moddable for high payloads, long travel, or what-have-you.

High setting will revert to normal at 19mph. When in low-range, this changes to 25mph. By height adjusting AHC, you can make normal height up to 1.75" higher. Which also make high 1.75" higher or an almost 4" lift for free.

The system also lower ~.75" at freeway speeds to improve aero and stability.

Thanks for the explanation. I would like to keep it stock but I want to add 33” all terrain tires, so what is the exact tire size (i.e.: 295/75/20) and wheel size that will work with the LX 570 using the stock AHC, even an it’s lowest setting without rubbing?

Thanks, yeah I’d love to have the LX 570 along with my C7 Z06, it would be a great combination for my garage!

I love V8s! :)

275/60/20 will fit with ease. 285/60/20 will also fit.

See this thread for more info and this link for an Excel/Sheets database. It's not perfect, but will give you the answer you need if you want to keep everything stock.

Not sure how aggressive you want to get. I tend towards bigger and wider. The same way I like my tires on my sports cars.

A 295/55R20 should drop in pretty readily with 1" spacers, and no mods.

A step up could be 305/55R20s, with minimal trimming

Are you handy? Will you do AHC maintenance yourself? Or would you take it to someone to do it? AHC maintenance is harder than oil change on your engine.

I had a long term loaner GX when my dealer stripped out my oil pan years ago. I preferred the GX almost across the board. If my camper was lighter I would own a GX over my LX no question.

A few things. You should spend some time in an LX. Park your GX next to it and look at the space and cargo are. As others said there is very little difference. If the reason for the change is more space you get almost nothing more out of the LX. Only thing you gain in terms of space is 3 seatbelts in the 3rd row vs 2. And the 3rd row seating is very basic, I think the GX has a more comfortable 3rd row for an adult.

Drive an LX if possible a few times. For me the GX is much more enjoyable to drive, more feedback, sportier handling (I’ll disclose I’m a sports car addict in remission). I call my LX the white elephant as it lumbers along slow and steady but has almost no steering or road feel.

As for 33’s (and larger). 33’s will fit but you will have to do some work to the front fender liners with a heat gun and zip ties on the posterior side or remove the front mud flaps.

Don’t get me wrong the LX is a good truck I just don’t think it is objectively better then the GX other then tow capacity. You gain almost nothing else for what like ~$25k?

I respectfully disagree with your assessment as someone who currently owns both and has previously owned multiples of both and often at the same time like I do currently. Yes, the GX doesn't feel as robust or tank like as the 200 but it weighs 600-700lbs less and likely has half of the sound dampening material as well. The GX does however feel as luxurious as the Cruiser (not quite as nice as the LX) and it's worlds better than it's step sibling the 5th Gen 4Runner (we had multiples of those as well). The sticker on our GX was $60K and the Cruiser was $86K, for $26K less it has slightly better headlights, a better screen/infotainment (Carplay), and it has a robust and reliable transmission and V8 as well (albeit much smaller than the 200's). There's a lot to like for a vehicle that is two thirds the cost new and in the current market is cheaper than the 200 by an even larger margin.

If I could only have one it would undoubtedly be the 200, but the GX is no slouch and it's a great alternative for those seeking an arguably better town car/daily driver.

I agree, it is not what I would consider a true full-size, I would coin it a 7/8-scale full-size or a compact full-size lol.

I was helping someone unload a GX recently and while on paper they may be similar, whatever extra length the LX has in the cargo area pays off a lot in the real world.

I went out and pulled the tape on both vehicles cargo areas just to see how close they really are. Keep in mind that I have my third row seats removed in my 200 and the GX has the third row folded flat into the floor. I have the depth measured from the opening to the lower seat back, the width at both its narrowest and widest dimensions and the height at it's lowest point which is at or near the opening at the rear.

GX460

37" deep
43" wide (narrowest)
51" wide (widest)
33.75" tall

Land Cruiser 200

42.5" deep
41.5" wide (narrowest)
55.5" wide (widest)
35.5" tall

As you can see, there is very little difference in the cargo dimensions but the 200 does feel bigger in reality than it actually is on paper. The 200 does have more depth from the rear of the wheel wells which is where both have their narrowest dimension.

I agree, around town the GX is more fun to drive because it is lighter on it's feet and faster to 40. Sportier is definitely how I would describe it in comparison to the 200. It makes for a great daily driver because of this characteristic but it isn't as good on the highway and that's why we prefer the 200 when we travel.

32's are no issue on the GX in stock form, 33's require a lift and anything bigger gets into BCM's, trimming, aftermarket bumpers, etc. There are quite a few guys running 35's on them now so it is possible without anything drastic.

Tex68,
Are those measurements of the cargo area with the second row all the way back?
The numbers surprise me in how similar the two vehicles are. I went from a GX460 to a LC200 because I wanted to be able to haul more and am constantly gruntled by how much more stuff I can carry. I don’t bother to bring the Yakima skybox on road trips anymore because of all the extra room inside the vehicle.
But I will say that I slide the second row forward a bit. My dog gets the entire second row, and doesn’t need the footwells.
(This was the case on the GX as well).

On the other hand, I much preferred driving the GX about town. Maybe it’s just in my head, but narrow roads and parking lots scare me much more with the LC than they ever did with the GX. Even getting up and down my driveway is a bit more at a chore now.
