Thinking about picking up an SM465

Are you aware of any known reason to look for that would make mine really resistant to shifting from 3 to 2?

The problem started long ago when It got into a really bad locker buck around a corner. I popped the top back then looking for something obvious on a synchro, but nothing jumped out at me.

It's getting all new seals at the least and maybe synchros during my current revitalizing project.

A weak link on 465s is the snap rings that retain the gears on the counter shaft. Wear on this allows the gears to move on the shaft and it will pop out of 3rd gear. GM made an updated countershaft spacer to replace the snap rings and prevent this problem. It is a $10 part. Pull the top cover and see if it is installed. You may want to rebuild it and add the updated spacer if it has not been done yet.

I am not aware that the snap ring problem is associated with the problem you describe, but if you replace the synchro rings, you might as well go "all in" and fix everything. It isn't that hard or expensive.

You might call Tourist Transmissions in SLC or Anaheim Gear and tell them about your problems. They have seen a lot more of these trannys than I have.

I am thinking of doing a rebuild for a just in case measure. I'll look into this spacer deal

spacer is a very common update, just about mandatory when you do a rebuild on one of these. it's really about the only weak point other than the output splines wearing but that takes a loooong time...

send me a pm if you need a rebuild kit. got them for a great price with or without synchro rings.

I will remember that. Thanks!

Thanks for the info. The iron fork I have IIRC had a hole where the pivot ball goes into and it was quite greasy, but I didn't see a spring anywhere.

In case your still wondering about the retainer clip. I stumbled onto this in the bottom of my parts washer while cleaning gears today.

Forgot I put it in there.
