60's are it. They are sort of a 40, with better running gear and a much bigger interior. My 40 gets about 3 good trips every summer. My 60 gets driven every day, enjoyed every day, and is the designated Home Depot runner and dog hauler. IMHO the 60's got all of Toyota's best stuff, before they went soft. Sleeping in a 60 is great. Sleeping in a 40 in the rain is terrible. BTDT and never again.

60's are friggin awesome and in some places can go where 40's wont be able to touch....(cause of wheel base and the fact that the 60s are cooler)
Riiiiiiiiiiight...

:flipoff2:

I had both and was the envey of all cruiser heads allowed to look in my garage.

I NEVER drove the the 40 unless it was to "show off" I've got two dogs and three kids all which likes to go out in the woods with me. The 40 just would not handle the load. We're in snow country heare, the 40 was the squirrelist rig I ever drove on packed snow.

I drove it less and less, finally during one of the gas price spikes I sold it.

I wish I had it back. Would still not drive it, I don't miss that, but you could sit on the front bumper and lean on the grill and drink beer and bench race. That's my story. It's like I read on this forum, "people get into crusiers because of the 40, they stay with cruisers because of the 60.

One last note, Lots of people got into sailing by wanting a "Hobie Cat" fast fun speed sled of a sail boat, can't cary much beer can't carry many women, you get wet, can't comfortably sail in the winter, can't make love on it unless you don't mind a audience..people that stayed in sailing got a mono hull with at least a small cabin. There's the 40/60 syndrome.

40 envy? a 40 is a step down.
Have it all! Drive a 55!

Yes, it's true. I have severe 40 envy right now. <snip>

Pighead is right, but not necessarily about 55s, though his is cool. It's really that any wagon, in the end, is better than an open, noisy, wet, cold, hot, bouncy 40. 40s do have their charms, and I love mine, but it's kind of a one trick pony. Wagons can do it all, and that's why Cruiserheads naturally gravitate that direction. I see on this board all the time, people selling 40s to fund a wagon, but few people selling a wagon to fund a 40.

Don't sell the 60

I have both a 40 and a 60. Since I got my 60 running, my 40 has just sat. Advantages of 60: 1. better ride; 2. more room (2 retrievers, a sled, 24 decoys, cooler, guns, spare clothes, waders, all your buddy's stuff, etc) ; 3. parts more likely to available at parts stores; 4. better driving visibility; 5 you can hear the radio or have a conversation with someone; 6. less apt to do a 180 or 360 in the snow/ice. If you lust for the 40, take a cool rag, put it on your forehead, and go lay on the couch for a while. It will go away.

Only benefit of a 60.

More room..

Everything else is just mild mods to a 40.

You can see out of a 60's windows in the winter. I had to scrape the inside of my 40's windows...

Done both. Had a 40 when I was younger, and loved it. After a dozen years, I sold it and went to buy a new one. Dealership said, "... those are no longer available in the US. Buy a new FJ60!"

I looked it over and decided I couldn't see a cruiser with carpeting, AC, and power steering. That was in 1984 or 85.

After many other rigs, I now own a 1987 FJ60, socially acceptable, tough, big inside, power steering, AC, and carpeting - and do not miss the 40, except sometimes, in the Summer...

You can run Cemetary Hill without body damage in a 40!
Lane

Eat McDonalds while you steer with your knee
Do the 'YMCA' while steering with your knee
Write notes while on your mobile and steering with your knee
Undo the top of a coke bottle while steering with your knee
Put soy sauce on your sushi while steering with your knee
Flick through your CD wallet while steering with your knee
Wave to well wishers on both sides of your vehicle at the same time while steering with your knee
Ahhh - the ability to steer straight without hanging on fiercely to the wheel - a small blessing 60 owners have over those with only a 40.

Do as I've done and own both!

i forgot to mention its not my DD and i am paranoid about rust so it never sees the road if there is salt down...
Yer paraniod about rust but you wanna buy a 40??? You haven't SEEN rust until you see a 40 dissapear before your eyes from rust.

Another thing you can't do in a 40 that you can do in a 60 is get jammed in between the trees on tight New England trails. I just tool down the trails in my 40 while wagon owners are doin' 3 pt turns to get between the trees. Lot harder to smack the rear bumper on a 40 since there is less overhang than a 60 too. Cruiserheads gravitate towards wagons??? You say so... I've owned both and a nice sports car too and would rather cruise in the 40. With a good suspension and seats they ride just fine IMHO. Only thing that "sucks" is hearing "nice Heep" from well-meaning folks who don't know the difference.:D

In Pete's (peepers) defense, if pretty much all you are doing with your Cruiser is trail riding, a wagon IS big. I still needed more people/cargo space but wanted to downsize from my FJ62. I went with an 85 4runner whichh no one would call "small" but compared to a 60/62, it's tiny, especially in width.

I loved my FJ62 though, I'd like a nice, mild FJ60 with a V8 for a family camping/lite'wheeler rig someday. But the wagons are just plain ole' BIG for New England woods'wheeling IMO.

So the reason to keep the 60 is so you can drive like an idiot???
