The truth about 22R and 22RE heads

AFAIK they are identical, there is no difference in the heads, in the same year range. The only difference is the cam.

I thought the deck height was different between the 22r and the re. I once got an engine from somebody that said that it was a rebuilt re. It was rebuilt but he put a 22r head on it and it would not work. The pistons would hit the head when I would try to turn it over. And yes the valve timing was right.

Deck height is determined by the block. There are two different blocks and two different 22rx heads. Pre 84 blocks were 2mm higher and had different intake/exhaust ports. Post 84 "Lazer" blocks are 2mm shorter and all heads are the same as was said.

i see. so as long as you stay within the same years, it doesn't matter if it's a r or re.

Correct.

But, a doesn't carb head have bigger valves then an EFI head ?

22R cylinder heads have a open/raised combustion chamber

22RE cylinder heads have a closed combustion chamber

Is this true?

Open/ raised / closed only means (according to my machinest) C.C

Open: 82/83 cc (turbo)

closed: 52/54 cc (EFI carb)

Nope. Do you have any data to the contrary?

No but L.C engineering does, great info on last page EVERYTHNG you need to know about 22R/E.

Block:

1975-80 20r Deck height 11.280"
Bore: 88.5mm or 3.484"

1981-84 22r Deck height 11.280"
Bore: 92.0mm or 3.622"

1985-95 22rE "Laser Block" 11.090"
Bore: 92mm or 3.622"

Head:

1975-80 22r

round intake port
round exh. port
80/81 cc
intake valve dia 43mm
exh. valve dia 35mm

1981-84

square intake
ronded exh.
82/83 cc
itake valve dia 44.5mm
exh valve dia 36.5mm

1985-95

square intake
pear exh
52/54 cc (EFI)
82/83 cc (RET)
intake valve dia 44.5mm
exh valve dia 36.5mm

With that being said I have seen different pistons (EFI, RET, ridge top) that lead me to believe that the Hybrid 20/22r is the 84 22r block with the (what I call) Ridge top pistons and open 80/81 cc head 20r, so there is more info out there I just cant back it up for sure.

With the two heads side to side you can see the difference in the RET and 20r head this makes me think the RET/ ridge top 22r combo will NOT work unless the machinest mills the head, dont know for sure though.
