If you decide to head north at all, Brook and Cut Throat Trout fishing is awesome on Henry's Lake near Yellowstone...we usually ice fish most of the week after Christmas since my work is shut down for at least a week or more during the holidays.
X2 on Henry's Lake. I haven't been for several years but there used to be some very large trout caught there. It's ~ 3.5 hours north of I-80 but you could take the scenic route through Jackson & Pinedale WY. If you're wanting to snowboard, Jackson Hole & Grand Targhee are both along the way.

We may end up that way. Was talking to my son about the trip and we are just going to kind of wander along. I took the time off work and got it approved. It's going to be a much needed break...

I have a colleague with a house in Clear Lake. I'll ask about bass fishing in December. But I think that's the slow season. Can you come out in May? Much better! But honestly, most fisherman in Northern California target trout, stripers and salmon in season, in rivers not lakes.

Are you fly fishing or something else? If you're fly fishing, on the way out, there's good fly fishing in the Ruby Mountains of NV, but it will be COOOOOLLLDDDD in December. Not sure the fish will be that active.

Andy,

Did you get a chance to ask your colleague about the fishing? All reports my son is hearing is that it is pretty kick a$$ that time of year. Water is cool so the fish are in the shallows. Last year guys were catching 6-8lb bass left and right.

Yes-they said to call the guide services (though likely a biased report). Still a few fish caught off the dock in winter. I don't know, I don't really bass fish but it seems like a difficult time to be out on the water. Lots of people bass fish in the Delta area south of me too.

Yep. A guy my son is friends with from a bass forum is going to take us out. He is a guide and has a YouTube channel of videos. He's a "professional angler". Sponsored and such. He says it's great then and isn't charging us.

Damn, I hope they don't find us at the bottom of the lake...Haha

Time for a little maintenance.

Had a crack in a vacuum hose...

The plastic covers over the plugs is pretty lame. But it hid a bunch of oil. And a hornets nest. Literally.

I'd like to point out that the 1FZ-FE is poorly designed. I don't particularly care for the design of it. The plugs and wires take 30 minutes (with two step 6s) to change. The concept of having the plugs recessed in where you need an actual 16mm plug socket to remove them is ridiculous.

This is what the plugs looked like. It's been a long time since they've been changed. Don't know how long exactly but each one

New plugs, wires, plug seals, valve cover gasket, distributor cap, rotor, PAIR and EGR Delete.

Should've inspected and wrapped the wiring harness by the EGR while I had it all apart! Ugh.

Yes. I'm sure I will be purchasing a fishing license in multiple states.

We CNR. Never take them with us. I'll even make sure to dump some water out on the ground for good measure.
That's a good thing: the fish in Clear lake are loaded with mercury!

Started on the oil pump cover seal and crank shaft seal. Got the radiator, shroud, and fan clutch/fan out. Got distracted flushing the coolant. And checking my diffs. Front diff had nasty bird soup puking out the overflow. Clearly pulling in a ton of moly. I thought it was all puking out the knuckles but clearly not. Going to check the breather to make sure it isn't plugged.

Found these hex plugs I've had laying around since July of 2015. Funny because my 92 and my son's 92 already have them. I didnt buy my 93 until March 2016. I didn't even know I had them. Just found them in my box of goodies.

Slight hiccup on my our trip this December. We were borrowing a RTT for the trip but that fell through. May end up sleeping in the 80 and just moving storage containers to the roof or front seats as needed. Don't know if I have the budget for buying a RTT before the trip...

Yeah. Those Toyota engineers are such slackers. At least the plugs aren't as bad as a water pump on a 3FE

Yeah, the original water pump was kind of a pain when I changed it at 19 years old when the original radiator went. I changed it because I was taking the front radiator out anyway. That'll be a pain in another 14-15 years...

The 1FZ-FE is a good engine. It just isn't as simple as the 3FE. If I was ever broken down somewhere I'd want to be in the 3FE. Then again, the 3FE doesn't break down!

Need to pull the wheels off and check the brakes. No concerns or anything but haven't checked them since March. She stops fine. E brake works fine. It's just been unseasonably warm so I figure I should give it one more look before winter.
