thanks Lil'John! so it has lower grae, what about street, will it make tranny noise better?, are this SM420 or SM465 4 speed ot they are still 3 speed like my current tranny?
Thanks and God bless guys!
Jorge

All SM420s and SM465s are 4 speeds. It's just that first gear is very low and unsyncronized, so people tend to drive them like 3 speeds. Meaning, only gears 2, 3, and 4 are used in routine use. Thus, "driven like a 3 speed". That first granny gear is extremely useful, particularly in the SM420 where it is 7:1. That is twice as low an a regular H42 Land Cruiser 4 speed, so you get significant gear reduction. I have an original shifter "ball" for the SM420 and it's labled: L, 1,2,3 and R, so clearly GM meant you to drive it as a 3 speed, with a very low granny when extra gearing was needed, like pulling stumps, agricultural work, etc.

The other benefits like,,,bullet proof strength, easy availability etc are all just bonus.

The other bonus' of an SM465 or SM420 to you, are that you already have all the needed important parts, ie the right transfer, the right clutch etc so it's close to a drop in for you. Since you have a SBC, I think you need a GM bellhousing of appropriate vintage.

If you don't go offroad at all, then I agree, the H42 (Standard Land Cruiser 4 speed) is the best possible tranny you could have, unless you decide to swap in an H55f, which is a whole different animal.

I have adapter for sm420 from extremebends.com and it clears trans case.Use late 3 speed transfer case shifter it is not vacuum if you don't want vacuum shift.

For me the big reason to go to the SM465 was the synchro's. I hated not being able to downshift with my stock 3spd. When my 3spd grenaded, it was an easy decision. To counter the adapting issue I actually mated my SM465 to an NP203 GRB, then used the AA plate adapter to mate the NP203 to the TC. Still ended up with a looooong drivetrain, but I believe it's only a bit longer than the SM465+TC with the AA long-style adapter.

Lil'John, Cruiserdrew, I wished I lived close to you guys, I will pick your brain all the time. To be honest, I am very new with FJ40 LCs, it always was my drean car and finally I have it. I think I am starting to understand all this serial # tranny language, so thank you so much for your help.
Don't miss understand me, I still go up in the mountains here in Montana, I just need my FJ to be in the road.
Also, I am not sure if the noise that I hear is the tranny or the T/case, the only thing I know is that when I am in 3 gear going fast it is noise.
God bless!
Jorge

I have the sm465 in my 40, I love it (Ihad one in a 72 chevy 1ton years ago also) yes it shifts like a HD truck trany and is a long throw but that is part of its charm after all its not a sports car you driving its a 4wd off road truck, it should feel like one.

The noise is likely to be the transfer case. The idler gear shaft and bearings are the weak link.
